Description
Benedict Blue is a postal worker employed at the C.H. Postal Company, where he serves as one of its original founding members alongside Claudia Hodgins and Cattleya Baudelaire. His name, given to him by Hodgins, is derived from a deity associated with travel and protection, a fitting title for someone whose profession involves delivering messages across great distances.

Before finding his place at the postal company, Benedict lived a markedly different life as a mercenary and former gladiator on a continent separate from the main setting of the story. His past is shrouded in mystery, as he was raised by an organization that trained children as military weapons and forcibly administered memory-erasing drugs, leaving him with no recollection of his early years. He eventually escaped from this life and worked as a hired fighter, gaining the nickname Blue due to his distinctive light blue eye color. A low point came when he was robbed and left for dead in a desert, only to be rescued by Hodgins, who offered him a new start and a job at the fledgling postal company.

Physically, Benedict is a slim young man with a handsome appearance, characterized by his spiky, sandy-blonde hair and striking sky-blue eyes. He dresses in a flashy, non-uniform style, typically wearing a loose shirt with suspenders, tight leather pants, and a pair of distinctive high-heeled boots, which have become a recognizable part of his image. His wardrobe also often includes a black fingerless glove and a red neckerchief.

In terms of personality, Benedict presents a contradictory nature. On the surface, he is often brusque, short-tempered, and speaks with a rude or disrespectful tone, even towards his boss and friend, Hodgins. This uncouth and stubborn exterior, however, belies a fundamentally kind, gentle, and caring individual. He is a diligent and responsible hard worker who demonstrates strong leadership skills in stressful situations. While he can be flirtatious and acts as if he is experienced with women, he also shows a surprisingly innocent and chivalrous side, becoming flustered by situations like a woman changing clothes in front of him. Despite his frequent complaints and lazy demeanor, he is deeply considerate of those he cares about.

Benedict is highly capable in combat, a skill set inherited from his time as a mercenary. Violet Evergarden herself has noted his high level of fighting ability, which includes proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and the use of firearms. This makes him a valuable asset to the C.H. Postal Company, especially when delivering mail to dangerous or unstable regions.

His key relationships are central to his role in the story. He shares a close, long-standing friendship with Claudia Hodgins, whom he trusts implicitly but addresses with casual irreverence, viewing him as a father figure for saving his life. With fellow original employee Cattleya Baudelaire, he has a famously combative relationship, marked by constant bickering and arguments that are a familiar backdrop to office life; this dynamic is often implied to conceal a deeper, more intimate connection. He acts as a senior colleague and supportive big brother figure to Violet Evergarden, whom he affectionately nicknames Vi, teaching her the ropes of being a postal worker and offering her advice and protection.

Benedict plays a pivotal role in the film Violet Evergarden I: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll. In this story, he becomes the mentor and protector of a young girl named Taylor Bartlett, who runs away from an orphanage and comes to the C.H. Postal Company hoping to become a postman so she can find her lost sister. Benedict is tasked with helping to train her, and despite his gruff demeanor, he patiently teaches her about the job and how to read. His most significant action is undertaking the crucial mission to deliver a letter from Taylor to her older sister, Amy. Through this act, he not only reconnects the separated siblings but also profoundly inspires Taylor, solidifying her resolve to become a postal worker herself, a path she follows with Benedict as her respected teacher, whom she calls Master.
