Description
Claudia Hodgins is the founder and president of the C.H. Postal Company, a position he established after serving in the military of Leidenschaftlich during the war that forms the recent history of the world. He is a man in his early to mid-thirties who served alongside Major Gilbert Bougainvillea, with whom he shared a close and trusted friendship. Prior to a decisive final battle, Gilbert made Claudia promise to watch over a young, enigmatic soldier named Violet Evergarden if anything were to happen to him. Following the war, during which both men were gravely injured and Gilbert was presumed dead, Claudia honored this vow by taking Violet in.

Claudia is a kind, warm, and charismatic individual who displays strong paternal instincts. He is described as having a naturally caring heart, and his actions consistently demonstrate a desire to provide opportunities for those around him. His first name, given because his parents expected a daughter, is a source of slight embarrassment, leading him to prefer the titles of President or Mr. Hodgins. While he is now a composed and trustworthy leader, he was once known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, a trait that his employee and close associate, Cattleya Baudelaire, sometimes teases him about.

Claudia’s primary motivation is the success of his postal company and the well-being of its employees, particularly Violet. He recognizes her profound struggle with empathy and emotion, noting that her inability to understand love stems from her traumatic past. He gives her the opportunity to work as an Auto Memory Doll, a profession that involves ghostwriting letters to articulate the unspoken feelings of clients, hoping this will help her understand the meaning of the Major’s final words to her, 'I love you'. This act is significant, as his colleague notes it is the first time Violet makes a decision for herself rather than simply following an order. Claudia’s dedication to her is further demonstrated through personal sacrifice, such as when he spends an entire month’s salary to buy back an emerald brooch that the Major had given her, a treasured possession that had been stolen. In the film Violet Evergarden I: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll, his role is to oversee the company, supporting his staff, including the mail carrier Benedict, who expresses a desire for a newer motorcycle for his deliveries.

His key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Violet is that of a guardian and mentor, guiding her as she learns to navigate human emotion and independence. His relationship with the late Major Gilbert is one of deep loyalty and respect, as he works to fulfill a promise that shapes his entire post-war life. He also has a close, possibly intimate, relationship with Cattleya, one of his most skilled Auto Memory Dolls, who provides him with support and is a key figure in his company.

Claudia himself undergoes subtle development, transforming from a man who, during the war, may have been more hot-headed, into a patient and responsible leader. He is the anchor of stability for Violet, providing her with a home, a purpose, and a family within the postal company. While he supports her quest to understand Gilbert’s love, he also harbors his own misgivings about his old friend, creating a sense that he is carefully managing what he reveals to protect Violet from further pain. As a former soldier, he possesses combat experience and leadership skills, but his most notable ability is his business acumen in founding a successful postal service and his profound sense of loyalty and compassion. He is defined not by physical prowess, but by his role as the paternal architect of Violet’s new life, enabling her journey of discovery.
