ONA
Description
Minamoto Hiromasa is a central figure in the anime Onmyōji, introduced as a court noble and musician of significant standing. He is the grandson of Emperor Daigo, bearing the Minamoto surname after being removed from the imperial line of succession. Hiromasa is known throughout the Heian capital as a skilled and well-liked member of the court, particularly respected for his talent as a flutist. He learned his musical craft under the guidance of his mentor, Lord Atsumi, and his expertise on the flute is one of his defining traits.

In terms of personality, Hiromasa stands in clear contrast to the more enigmatic and detached onmyōji, Abe no Seimei. Hiromasa is straightforward, emotional, and deeply sincere. He holds a strong belief in the inherent goodness of people and consistently chooses to trust in their better nature. This optimism often leads Seimei to call him naive, but Hiromasa remains unshaken in his convictions. He is quick to express his feelings, as seen when he angrily confronts Seimei after the exorcism of a spirit named Tadami, calling the onmyōji callous. Though he later apologizes, Seimei acknowledges that his words contained a truth worth noting. Hiromasa also points out that Seimei avoids using his name when addressing him, interpreting this as a deliberate attempt to maintain emotional distance between them.

Hiromasa’s motivations are rooted in a genuine desire to help others and to do what he believes is right. He becomes involved in the supernatural affairs of the capital not out of personal ambition, but because his sense of duty and compassion compels him to act. When a fellow lord encounters a demon woman during a nightly outing, it is Hiromasa who seeks a solution, leading him to meet Seimei. Despite the rumors and wariness surrounding the onmyōji, Hiromasa quickly forms a bond with him and enjoys their time together.

His role in the story is that of Seimei’s partner and emotional foil. Together, they investigate and resolve the demonic disturbances plaguing Heian-kyo. Hiromasa provides a human, empathetic perspective to the problems they face, balancing Seimei’s more calculating and detached approach. He serves as the heart of their partnership, often advocating for mercy and understanding even when dealing with dangerous supernatural beings.

Hiromasa’s key relationship is with Abe no Seimei. Their partnership deepens over the course of their missions, evolving from a reluctant collaboration into a profound friendship. Seimei frequently teases Hiromasa for his lack of supernatural knowledge, but Hiromasa’s unwavering loyalty and emotional openness gradually chip away at Seimei’s defenses. Another significant relationship is with Lord Atsumi, his flute mentor. It is Hiromasa’s kind and trusting nature that ultimately angers Atsumi and brings out the demon within him, and Hiromasa’s faith in his mentor leads to his own initial death. Even after being resurrected, he attempts to reason with Atsumi rather than fight him.

His character undergoes notable development throughout the series. When Seimei is gravely attacked by a creature called the sekisanko, Hiromasa is beside himself with worry and makes the ultimate sacrifice, giving up his talent for playing the flute in an effort to save his friend. This act demonstrates the depth of his loyalty and the lengths he is willing to go to protect those he cares about. His death and subsequent resurrection through a ritual performed by Seimei and the immortal woman Aone mark a turning point in the story. The sacrifice of Aone’s immortality to bring him back underscores his importance as one of the two destined protectors of Heian-kyo, as foretold by the stars.

Hiromasa’s notable abilities are primarily musical. He is a prodigious flutist whose playing is remarked upon throughout the court. Beyond ordinary music, his flute skills hold a deeper significance, as he is willing to barter that very talent to save a friend. While not an onmyōji himself, his courage, sincerity, and emotional intelligence are invaluable assets in facing the demons and curses that threaten the capital.
