ONA
Description
KAITO is a Virtual Singer with somewhat unruly dark blue hair and a matching oversized scarf. His masculine voice sounds fresh and natural, and he possesses a wide vocal range. As a Virtual Singer, he resides in a world called SEKAI, but he can also appear in the real world to consult with people who have trouble understanding their true feelings through music. The character exists in multiple distinct versions across different SEKAI, each with its own unique personality and role.
In the Wonderland SEKAI, KAITO serves as the responsible and mature leader of a theater troupe. He naturally falls into a parental role, caring for the younger members of the group as well as the SEKAI's collection of plushies, though he would prefer to be seen as an older brother figure rather than a parent. He is dedicated to his duties as troupe leader, sometimes to the point of overworking himself, at which point Hatsune Miku will relieve him of his responsibilities.
Within the Street SEKAI, KAITO appears as an excellent DJ who displays a very carefree and free-spirited personality. Kagamine Rin and Len often make fun of him for this laidback demeanor, yet they still respect him, and Len specifically takes DJ lessons from him. Despite his casual approach, he does take his mentoring seriously on occasion, and Kohane has noted that he pays more attention to Rin than to the other students, much to Rin's embarrassment.
In the School SEKAI, KAITO joins the Virtual Singers band as a guitarist. He is extremely shy and tends to communicate through his instrument rather than speaking directly. His quiet nature makes him evasive of social situations, sometimes even hiding from other characters to avoid conversation. He also struggles with insecurity about his usefulness to the band members because of his difficulty expressing his feelings openly.
The Stage SEKAI presents KAITO as both an idol and a manager. He serves as a reliable figure who seems to know what others need before they realize it themselves, and he is rarely shown to be tired despite his heavy workload. He considers himself a fan of the other idols, believing that maintaining the perspective of a fan helps him understand what audiences want from performances.
The Empty SEKAI version of KAITO is notably aloof and blunt. He openly states that he has no intention of coddling the members of the group known as Nightcord at 25:00. Instead, he tells them directly what they should do. He is particularly critical of Mafuyu, expressing frustration that she is unwilling to properly rebel against her mother and express her true feelings.
Throughout all his iterations, KAITO maintains close relationships with the other Virtual Singers. He acts as a doting older brother figure to Kagamine Rin and Len, though they frequently play pranks on him. He does not hold grudges for these pranks and is known to leave them Christmas presents each year. With Hatsune Miku, he enjoys singing on the same stage and deeply appreciates how she shows her appreciation for him, sometimes to the point of tears. In the Wonderland SEKAI, he acts as a guiding figure and partner to Miku in running their theater troupe. With Megurine Luka, he shares a level-headed dynamic, and the two are noted for being the most grounded members of the Virtual Singer group.
KAITO's development varies across each SEKAI. In the School SEKAI, he gradually becomes more comfortable with the members of Leo/need, though his shy nature remains a core trait. In the Wonderland SEKAI, he learns to rely on others and allow them to help him when he overworks himself. The Empty SEKAI version shows perhaps the most distinct perspective, as he challenges the approach of the other Virtual Singers and pushes for more direct confrontation with difficult emotions.
As a Virtual Singer, KAITO possesses the ability to use music to help people understand their true feelings. Beyond this, his notable abilities are tied to the specific SEKAI he inhabits: he is a skilled actor and theater manager, a talented DJ and instructor, a capable guitarist, and an efficient idol manager with an intuitive understanding of audience desires.
