Description
Aoteru Misumi is the central protagonist of Nippon Sangoku. Before the story begins, he is a young man living in the rural countryside of Ehime within the nation of Yamato. He does not come from a prestigious military family or the aristocracy, having been taken in by his father-in-law, Nobuhito, after his own parents died of illness. Working as a low-ranking agricultural officer, his life is quiet and unassuming. However, he possesses a deep interest in Japan's history and spends his free time reading in the library and pursuing map-making as a hobby. This self-taught knowledge forms the foundation of his character, providing him with a broad understanding of the past that he believes can be used to shape the future.
In terms of personality, Aoteru is defined by a sharp intellect and a disciplined, analytical nature. He is pragmatic and grounded, often clashing with the more impulsive and emotionally-driven perspective of his wife, Saki. Early on, he is shown to be dismissive of traditions he views as having no practical or religious significance to his people, such as the wearing of a wedding dress. While he can be outraged by what he perceives as frivolousness, his defining trait is his remarkable self-control. When faced with immense personal tragedy, his mind races with violent fantasies of revenge, but he deliberately calms himself, recognizing that brute force would only perpetuate the endless cycle of bloodshed. He values discipline over rash action and believes that true change can only be achieved through intellect and strategy.
Aoteru’s primary motivation is to end the pointless violence that has fractured Japan and to unify the three warring nations. This goal is born not from a desire for personal power but from a deep-seated revulsion at the cruelty of the current regime. The immediate catalyst for his journey is the brutal murder of his wife, Saki, at the hands of Taira Denki, the corrupt lord of home affairs who is the true ruler of Yamato. Rather than seeking simple vengeance against the man who killed her, Aoteru resolves to dismantle the entire corrupt system that allowed such an atrocity to occur. He aims to rise through the ranks not as a warrior, but as a strategist, using his knowledge and persuasive voice to reunify the country from a position of influence.
His role in the story is that of an unlikely hero who will become a brilliant military strategist. Initially a background figure with no social standing, his life is forever changed by the tyranny of the Taira clan. Following the death of his wife, he shifts from a passive agricultural officer to an active player in the political and military conflicts of the Sangoku era. He does not rely on physical strength but on his eloquence and sharp insight, leveraging words and knowledge as his primary weapons. His journey is about ascending the government service, known as the Toryumon, to work towards unification from within the system, all while subtly exacting his revenge on those who wronged him.
Key relationships heavily define his early development. His marriage to Higashimachi Saki is central to his character. She is his opposite: bold, emotional, and guided by a sense of immediate justice. She challenges his passive nature, famously telling him to "learn courage" when he advises her to "learn discipline." Her death is the traumatic event that forges his resolve. His relationship with his father-in-law, Nobuhito, is one of patronage and intellectual respect, as Nobuhito took him in and allowed him to marry his daughter despite his low status. His antagonist is Taira Denki, a monstrous and privileged head of state whom Aoteru accuses of poisoning the late emperor. Denki's casual cruelty serves as the perfect representation of the corrupt system Aoteru vows to destroy.
Aoteru’s development is marked by a transition from a disciplined intellectual to a proactive agent of change. He begins as a man who warns his wife to be cautious and learn discipline in the face of oppression. After witnessing the horrific consequences of that oppression, he does not abandon his principles but channels them into a focused, long-term plan. His first major act of development is a masterful display of psychological warfare. When confronted with his wife's murder, he overcomes his immediate rage and uses his intelligence to turn Denki's men against each other. By cleverly quoting the tax collector’s own words, he manipulates the situation so that Denki himself orders the collector's execution. This moment signifies his transformation from a victim to a strategist who can dismantle his enemies without lifting a weapon.
Aoteru’s most notable ability is his genius-level intellect, specifically applied to strategy, history, and human psychology. He is exceptionally eloquent, possessing a persuasive voice capable of rallying people and manipulating powerful figures. His hobby of map-making and his study of history are not mere pastimes but tools he uses to understand the geopolitical landscape. His primary strength is his ability to think several steps ahead, using non-violent means to achieve his ends. He demonstrates that his sharp insight can be a deadlier weapon than any sword, capable of destroying entire systems of power rather than just individual enemies.
