Description
Mitsuhide Ryumon is the Borderland General of Yamato, one of the three kingdoms in a post-apocalyptic Japan. Born in Yamato Calendar year 8 in Hyogo County, he was discovered at age twenty-four by Emperor Fuji II, who recognized his talent and appointed him to his position. He wears an eyepatch over his left eye and is characterized by a calm, composed, and deeply principled demeanor. He is widely regarded as a man of unwavering moral integrity, intellectual sharpness, and formidable martial skill. His personal motto reflects his commitment to the nation: he refuses to compromise when the future of the country is at stake.
Ryumon is driven by a profound sense of duty to protect Yamato from both external enemies and internal corruption. His primary motivation is to preserve the nation and safeguard its emperor, Fuji III, from the encroaching tyranny of Taira Denki, the Lord of Home Affairs who has effectively seized control of the government. Despite holding immense power as a borderland general with a large army, Ryumon does not exploit his position for personal gain. Instead, he adheres strictly to his principles, serving as a moral counterweight to Taira’s greed and ruthlessness. His ultimate goal is to maintain stability and prevent the total collapse of Yamato under Taira’s misrule.
In the story, Ryumon serves as the commanding officer whom the protagonist, Misumi Aoteru, seeks to join by passing the rigorous recruitment examination known as the Tōryūmon. He is a major supporting character whose actions shape the political and military landscape of the narrative. By leading the Borderland General Army, he acts as the primary military bulwark against the kingdom of Seii and other external threats. Simultaneously, his existence as the last independent power center in Yamato places him in direct opposition to Taira Denki, making him the single most significant obstacle to Taira’s ambition of absolute rule. The conflict between Ryumon and Taira forms a central tension in the series.
Ryumon’s key relationships include his strategist, Kaku Yasuaki, a brilliant tactician whose counsel has secured many victories. He also becomes a mentor figure to Misumi Aoteru, recognizing the young man’s potential and allowing him to prove his worth through the Tōryūmon. His relationship with Emperor Fuji III is one of loyalty and protection, as he upholds the emperor’s authority against Taira’s usurpation. In contrast, his relationship with Taira Denki is deeply adversarial; Taira views Ryumon as his greatest threat and constantly schemes to neutralize him.
Throughout the series, Ryumon undergoes significant trials. After a hard-fought campaign against Seii, Taira Denki frames him on false charges, resulting in his imprisonment and the stripping of his rank. This development places him in a precarious position and forces his allies to act on his behalf. His arc thus moves from a position of strength and respect to one of vulnerability, testing the loyalty of those around him and highlighting the corruption within Yamato.
Ryumon’s notable abilities are both military and personal. He is an exceptional commander, demonstrated during the Battle of Nagashino where he overcame a numerically superior enemy force through a daring surprise attack. Physically strong and well-versed in a wide range of tactics, he is also capable of personally leading charges and defeating enemy commanders in combat. Beyond the battlefield, he possesses strong judgment and a keen ability to assess character, as shown by the careful design of the Tōryūmon examination. His mental fortitude is equally remarkable; he endures humiliation and personal sacrifice for the sake of the nation, as when he kneels publicly to secure Yamato’s future. He is a figure of quiet endurance, standing as a symbol of integrity in a broken world.
