Description
Kanata Katagiri, also known by his birth name Kanata Rivington, is the central figure in the narrative. He is a young man of British and Japanese heritage who was raised in Cambridge, England, before traveling to Japan as a nineteen-year-old. His decision to go to Japan is driven by two primary goals: to participate in the MFG racing competition and to find his long-lost father, whom he has never truly known. In an effort to attract his father's attention, he competes under his paternal surname, Katagiri.
Kanata possesses a calm, polite, and humble demeanor that often leads him to feel embarrassed by praise from others. Despite this gentle personality away from the track, he is intensely focused and fearless when behind the wheel of a car. His core motivation for racing within the MFG is not for wealth or fame but to push his own limits and to use the platform as a way to locate his missing parent. To support himself during his stay in Japan, he takes on a part-time job at a restaurant.
The character has an extraordinary background in motorsports that began in childhood. He started racing karts at the age of four and became a champion in the British Kart Championships, winning six major titles before he was nine years old. By the age of ten, he had moved to Formula 4, where he won the championship after two years. He completed the curriculum at the Royal Donington Park Racing School, where he was a student of the legendary rally and downhill racer Takumi Fujiwara, and graduated with the best overall score in the school's history. Although he received numerous sponsorship offers after graduating, he rejected them all to return home and care for his mother during her declining health, leading to a two-year hiatus from competitive racing before he entered MFG.
Upon arriving in Japan, Kanata stays with the Saionji family, who are old friends of his parents. He develops a close, slow-building bond with their daughter, Ren Saionji, who becomes his primary supporter and helps him search for clues regarding his father's whereabouts. He is supported in the MFG races by Ogata, a man who was introduced to him by Mr. Saionji and who provides the Toyota 86 that Kanata drives in the competition. Throughout the second season, which features races such as the Ashinoko GT and the Peninsula Manazuru, Kanata demonstrates his growing reputation and resilience. Despite a significant handicap, such as racing with an injured left elbow after saving Ren from an accident, he makes the decision to compete, showing his determination to push through physical pain.
His driving style is heavily influenced by his mentor and is known for being smooth, clean, and highly technical, allowing him to preserve his tires while maintaining high speeds. To compensate for the lack of power in his Toyota 86 against superior machines, Kanata relies on a set of notable abilities and techniques. One of his most significant assets is a photographic memory, which allows him to perfectly memorize track layouts and road conditions after seeing them only a few times. He has also demonstrated a range of advanced racing maneuvers. These include the Disappearing Line, a technique used to move into an opponent's blind spot to overtake them; using left-foot braking, which he relied on heavily during the third round to compensate for his shifting handicap; and the Gutter Run, where he utilizes the road gutter to avoid understeer and overtake rivals. He is also credited with inventing a new technique known as the Sidewalk Run, where he drives on the sidewalk to overtake opponents during the final lap of a race. His ability to set exceptional lap times on both real tracks and in simulations consistently attracts attention from rivals and fans alike.
