Description
Renjiro Hatonami, also known as 鳩波蓮司郎, is an elderly Japanese man with short dark grey hair, glasses, and a habitual tendency to chew on a stick. He leads the Galients, an outlaw gang of former convicts who escaped prison after it was overrun by Gibia creatures. Before the apocalyptic events, he headed a yakuza organization and was later imprisoned for unspecified crimes.
His primary motivation centers on securing food for his group in the wasteland, driving him to orchestrate attacks on other survivors like Sensui Kanzaki's faction to seize supplies. He wields a Nagadosu, a type of Japanese sword, though his proficiency with it is mediocre. Under his command, the Galients prioritize survival through scavenging and theft, often targeting vulnerable travelers.
Renjiro's strained relationship with his daughter, Ayame Hatonami, a former police officer, forms a critical conflict. Ayame confronts him for prioritizing theft over combating the Gibia threat, revealing her mother died after infection. She publicly denounces his actions, expresses shame, and demands he never appear before her again, highlighting their moral divide: Ayame advocates protecting survivors, while Renjiro preys on them.
His story culminates tragically when Dr. Yoshinaga deliberately infects Ayame with an enhanced Gibia virus, causing her mutation into a monstrous form. Sensui Kanzaki intervenes to decapitate Ayame as an act of mercy, sparing Renjiro from killing his own daughter and resulting in the loss of his only child.
Renjiro demonstrates pragmatic leadership within the Galients, coordinating movements to less contested areas like the countryside for better food access. His interactions with allies like Guren Soshigaya, his longtime second-in-command, indicate loyalty built during their past in organized crime. The etymology of his name reflects aspects of his identity: "Renjiro" combines "lotus" (蓮), "officer/boss" (司), and "son" (郎), while "Hatonami" means "pigeon/dove" (鳩) and "wave" (波).
