ONA
Description
Douglas Ken Osborn, known by the nickname Brody, is one of the primary human characters in the 2023 anime. He is a twelve-year-old boy of mixed heritage, with an American father who serves as a general in the United States Forces Japan and a Japanese mother. Despite his youth, Brody has a notably large and physically imposing build, a trait influenced by his father’s military background and his own role as the ace player of his international school’s American football club. He stands approximately 158 centimeters tall.

In terms of personality, Brody initially presents himself as a delinquent. He is hot-tempered and is often seen associating with a rough group of friends, engaging in bullying behavior such as stealing money from other children. His aggressive and confrontational nature puts him in frequent conflict with his peer Satoru "Joe" Matsuoka, as both are quick to resort to fighting. This troublesome exterior, however, masks deeper internal conflicts, primarily a strained relationship with his father, the General. His delinquent actions are implied to be a form of rebellion against his father’s authority and expectations.

Brody’s role in the story begins as an antagonist to the other children, but this changes when kaiju attacks begin in the summer of 1989. After the initial Gyaos attack in Tokyo, he finds himself thrown together with the other protagonists. His motivations shift from petty delinquency to a more active role in the central conflict. Because of his father, Brody has access to military information that proves vital to the group. He is the one who uses this inside knowledge to lead the other children into the sewers to investigate the kaiju threat, pushing the plot forward.

His key relationships are central to his development. The most significant is with his father, General Raymond Osborn. There is a clear tension between them, defined by the father’s stern, military demeanor and the son’s rebellious acting out. In a pivotal moment, the General slaps Brody for his recklessness, a harsh display of their difficult dynamic. Despite this friction, Brody is able to use his father’s position and, when necessary, appeal to him for support, such as convincing him to redirect military fire against the kaiju Jiger. Brody also shares an unexpected bond with Junichi Ichihara, as both possess a deep knowledge of military equipment and tactics, setting them apart from their other friends.

Throughout the series, Brody undergoes notable development. He moves from being a solo-acting bully to a reliable and even heroic member of the group. His inherent bravery, physical strength, and tactical knowledge, initially used for intimidation, become assets in the fight for survival against the various kaiju. He learns to channel his aggression and family-related frustration into protecting his peers.

While Brody does not possess any supernatural powers, his notable abilities lie in his physical prowess and his unique knowledge set. He is an exceptional athlete and a formidable fighter for his age. Furthermore, he has a keen understanding of military hardware and strategy, likely absorbed from his father’s world, which proves consistently useful when dealing with the global kaiju crisis.
