Description
Hiroki Wada, known to his friends and family as Boco, is an eleven-year-old boy and a central figure in the summer of 1989 when the events of the story take place. He is a sixth-grade student who is scheduled to attend summer school, a prospect he resists as he would much rather spend his vacation playing with his two best friends, Joe and Junichi. Boco lives alone with his mother, a copywriter, and has a close relationship with her.
Boco is characterized by a gentle and caring nature, but this is coupled with a headstrong and fearless personality that often leads him into trouble. He has a strong instinct to help others in need, even at the risk of his own safety, as demonstrated when he ignores his friends' warnings to rescue a turtle trapped in tree roots. This bravery also manifests in his willingness to confront a local bully, Brody, to retrieve stolen money, and later, to refuse to leave the same bully behind during a kaiju attack. Despite being the most unreliable member of his friend group and often causing worry for those around him, his heart is consistently in the right place.
Boco's primary motivation throughout the narrative is the protection of his friends and the giant turtle kaiju who becomes his protector, Gamera. He quickly develops a deep and trusting bond with Gamera, naming the creature himself, and is convinced of the kaiju's benevolent intentions even when others are uncertain. This faith is tested and proven unshakeable when he learns that he is a high-level "code-holder". This status means that if a kaiju were to devour him, it would gain the power to consume all of humanity, a fact that the Eustace Foundation intends to exploit to "purify" the Earth. His role in the story is therefore not just as a witness but as the key target for the kaiju and a pawn in a much larger, sinister plan for global extinction.
His key relationships are the driving force of his character development. His friendship with the pragmatic and protective Joe is central, and Boco's stubbornness sometimes leads to conflict, notably when Joe voices his suspicions about the Eustace Foundation. The bond with Gamera is the most significant, evolving from one of simple rescue to a mutual, telepathically linked connection where Boco's words and belief can restore Gamera's will to fight. Even after Gamera is turned evil by a virus, Boco's unwavering faith brings him back to his senses. The bully Brody also becomes a key ally, with Boco's example of mercy and courage helping to reform their relationship. Through these trials, Boco matures from a reckless boy who needs protecting to a determined individual who is willing to put himself in harm's way to save his protector, crying and pleading for Gamera's life and later distracting a kaiju to buy the wounded turtle time to recover.
Boco is an ordinary human child with no superhuman abilities. His significance lies in his biological status as the code-holder, which makes him a beacon for the kaiju, and his profound telepathic or spiritual link to Gamera, which allows him to communicate with and influence the monster. His notable trait is not a physical power but his extraordinary courage, loyalty, and capacity for empathy, which ultimately prove to be the deciding factors in the battle to save the world.
