Description
Kathleen Funada, a biracial scientist collaborating with Dr. Yoshinaga, dedicates herself to curing the Gibia virus—a pathogen mutating humans into monstrous entities. Her mother, Yurika Funada, aids their research despite grappling with a mental condition that blurs her perception of humans and Gibia. Kathleen’s childhood was marked by her father’s early death, leaving only fleeting recollections of his presence.

She stands out with waist-length blonde hair, crimson eyes, and vibrant attire: a red-pink sleeveless top, green skirt, red-white belt, and crimson boots. In the desolate 2030 landscape, two years post-Gibia outbreak, her optimism persists. Unintentionally channeling remnants of Yoshinaga’s spacecraft through her neural patterns, she summons three Edo-era warriors—Sensui Kanzaki, Kenroku Sanada, and Yukinojyo Onikura—to bolster humanity’s fight.

Quick-thinking and resourceful, she rescues Sensui and Kenroku using a taser’s electrical surge, capitalizing on Gibia’s vulnerability. She bridges eras by integrating the warriors with her team, including Yurika and Yoshinaga. Though she admires Sensui’s swordsmanship during a kendo spar, her strengths lie in intellect over combat. Tensions arise as Yukinojyo’s growing affection for Yurika complicates their dynamic, especially when Kathleen shields her mother during attacks.

Kathleen chronicles their struggles in video logs, determined to preserve her legacy. Tragedy strikes when Yurika succumbs to infection, prompting Yukinojyo to euthanize her pre-transformation. Grief-stricken yet resolute, Kathleen channels loss into relentless research, striving to honor Yurika and spare others similar anguish.

Her name encapsulates duality: “Funada” merges “ship” and “field” in Japanese, while “Kathleen” stems from Irish roots meaning “pure.” This duality mirrors her hybrid heritage and symbolic role as a nexus between eras, disciplines, and survivalist pragmatism. Though her scientific efforts are eclipsed by ethical quandaries surrounding Yoshinaga’s motives, her choices persistently underscore resilience amid collapse.
