ONA
Description
Gawain Nanaumi is the central protagonist of his story, a cheerful and energetic ten-year-old boy with a strong sense of justice and a thick regional accent from his birthplace in rural Fukushima. He is of mixed heritage and was raised by his grandfather, Taizo Nanaumi, after his mother, Emiko, passed away shortly after his birth. His father, the legendary golfer Wouzel Phoenix, disappeared following this tragedy, leaving Gawain to be brought up in the mountainous countryside with no memory of his parents.

Before discovering golf, Gawain's primary dream was to become a professional baseball player and the home run king, as he idolized powerful hitters. His life changes course upon a chance encounter with the professional golfer Kiria Nishino, who is visiting his hometown. Seeing the incredible distances a golf ball could travel, far surpassing a baseball, immediately captivates him, and he becomes fascinated with the sport. Encouraged by his grandfather, he leaves home to live in Tokyo and train under Kiria's guidance.

Gawain possesses an exceptionally bright and honest personality. He is known for his relentless optimism, boundless energy, and a straightforward way of speaking that can sometimes be surprising or unconventional due to his rural upbringing. He has a clear and firm moral compass, unafraid to voice his convictions when he sees something he believes is wrong. While occasionally naive about sarcasm or social cues, his authentic and sincere nature easily draws people to him. His youthful, round facial features often appear in a super-deformed, soft style, earning him the nickname Punisuke.

His natural talent for golf is extraordinary, emerging the moment he first swings a club. His initial drive exceeds 300 yards, a distance surpassing many professional averages. His raw power is built on a foundation of lower-body strength and balance developed from traversing the mountainous terrain of his home. Gawain's most notable ability is the Rising Impact, a legendary skill that allows him to consistently hit the ball with the club's perfect sweet spot, achieving drives of approximately 450 yards. He also develops the Explosion Spin, a powerful backspin technique that causes the ball to dig into the green upon landing and bounce forcefully forward, allowing him to target the cup directly, though this often limits his control to primarily straight shots. Later in the Camelot Cup tournament, after being struck on the head by another player's ball, he enters a temporary, trance-like state called Gawain Phoenix, where his eyes lose their luster and he plays with an intensely aggressive and uninhibited style.

His central motivation is to master the sport of golf and to continue hitting the ball farther than anyone else, a simple joy he recalls from his first encounter with the game. He competes to test his abilities against strong rivals and to prove himself. His journey takes him to Camelot Academy in Japan, where he hones his skills alongside other gifted young golfers. His most significant relationship is with Kiria Nishino, who begins as his mentor and eventually becomes his wife, with the two later having a son. He also forms a deep and pivotal rivalry with Lancelot Norman, a prodigy of putting. Initially losing to Lancelot, Gawain is forced to learn that golf requires more than just power, and their competitive friendship pushes both to greater heights. He also builds strong bonds with his fellow academy students, including Riser Hopkins, Liebel, and Yumiko Koizumi.

Throughout the story, Gawain undergoes considerable development. He begins as a raw talent who knows only how to drive for distance but learns the importance of every aspect of the game, including putting and strategy. He faces and overcomes psychological hurdles, such as a crisis of confidence after being belittled by a rival. Despite suffering from physical ailments like a broken rib and illness during crucial matches, he demonstrates incredible resilience and determination, finishing the Camelot Cup with a remarkable score of twenty under par. Years later, he fulfills his immense potential, becoming the world's number one ranked golfer. His skills are reflected in his impressive statistics, which include an average drive of 440 yards, an average of 1.9 putts per round, and a documented best score of twenty under par. Beyond golf, he also possesses a notable talent for drawing realistic portraits, a gift inherited from his artist mother.
