Description
Général Arès is a major supporting character in Sand Land: The Series who serves as a high-ranking officer in the King’s Royal Army. Known for his sharp tactical mind and unwavering sense of duty, he is initially presented as a stern and disciplined soldier. His physical appearance is distinguished by his neatly styled black hair featuring a prominent curl, a small mustache, and a well-built frame, which he typically clothes in a dark gray and black general’s uniform.

Arès was appointed as the replacement for the legendary General Shiba, a hero presumed dead thirty years prior to the events of the story. This connection is deeply personal for Arès, as his father, Apo, was a soldier who served under Shiba and perished in a massive explosion during a mission to destroy a mysterious weapon. Driven by a desire to avenge his father, Arès is initially depicted as a short-sighted and duty-bound antagonist who relentlessly hunts down Rao, unaware that Rao is actually Shiba in disguise. He believes Shiba is responsible for his father’s death and is determined to capture him.

As the narrative progresses, Arès’s personality reveals greater complexity. He is fundamentally an honorable man with a great reputation who commands fierce loyalty from his troops. His rigid worldview begins to crumble when he discovers the truth about the explosion that killed his father. He learns that the mission was not a heroic sacrifice but a calculated act of betrayal orchestrated by Supreme Commander Zeu. Zeu had lied to Shiba’s unit, using them as pawns to destroy a water-producing machine created by the Picchi people, all to maintain the King’s monopoly on water.

This revelation marks a crucial turning point for Arès. His motivation shifts from seeking personal vengeance to pursuing justice against the corrupt leadership of his own army. Once he confirms Zeu’s treachery, he abandons his pursuit of Rao and instead allies with him and the demons, including the demon prince Beelzebub. Initially distrustful of demons, Arès grows to respect them through their actions. His sense of honor and duty redirects toward the greater good, making him a formidable ally in the final confrontation against Zeu, whom he ultimately helps defeat.

Following the defeat of Zeu and the restoration of Sand Land’s water supply, Arès’s development culminates in his assumption of a new leadership role. Rao, recognizing his competence and integrity, recommends that Arès succeed Zeu as the Supreme Commander of the Royal Army. He accepts this position and proves to be a great leader. His tactical abilities and leadership are showcased again during the subsequent invasion from Forest Land, where he plays a crucial role in defending Sand Land against the forces of General Bred and the angel Muniel. Throughout the series, General Arès evolves from a short-sighted antagonist driven by grief into a principled hero and a respected supreme commander, defined by his astute strategic mind, his capacity for change, and his unwavering loyalty to the truth.
