ONA
Description
The Sergeant, known by the alias Le Sergent, is a powerful and enigmatic mafia boss who operates as the mastermind behind the underground martial arts tournament called KODOKU. She is first introduced when Juzo Fujimaki, a wanted criminal on the run, is severely injured after fighting a bear in Hokkaido. The Sergeant arranges for an underground doctor to treat his wounds and provides him with a hiding place, all while communicating solely through her network of henchmen. Because she never meets him directly and works entirely through intermediaries, Juzo and everyone in the criminal underworld who has heard of her remain completely unaware that the Sergeant is a woman. She further conceals her true identity by disguising herself as a nun.
The Sergeant is the organizer and driving force behind KODOKU, an illegal and deadly fighting tournament where participants can die. She maintains a vast web of connections with influential people and celebrities around the world, which she uses to host high-stakes illegal gambling surrounding the matches. Her skill as a promoter has allowed the KODOKU society to grow significantly, though very little is known about her personal history beyond her alias. She treats her henchmen as disposable puppets who carry out her orders without knowing her true nature.
Her primary motivation is the success and expansion of KODOKU, and she demonstrates a complete disregard for human life in pursuing that goal. After witnessing Juzo defeat a bear with his bare hands, she recognizes his potential as a fighter and sets out to recruit him for the tournament. When some members of the KODOKU society express hesitation about his inclusion, she manipulates events to prove his worth. She orchestrates a conflict between Juzo and Ichiro Shino, a respected karate master who won the Hokushinkan Tournament, by having her henchmen harass Shino and his daughter. After Juzo defeats Shino, the society loses interest in the karate master and shifts its focus entirely to Juzo. The Sergeant then establishes a rule that anyone who defeats Juzo gains direct entry into the tournament, which provokes multiple fighters, including Joze, to pursue him.
The Sergeant reveals herself in person after Juzo defeats Joze. She offers Juzo a deal: compete in KODOKU and win, and she will use her influence to clear his name and remove him from the wanted list, allowing him to live a luxurious life overseas for a few years. When Juzo refuses, she reveals her leverage. At the time she rescued him from the bear attack, she had her doctor surgically implant ten thousand dormant eelworms into his body. These parasites are embedded with nanomachines, and a single signal from her can activate them, leading to his death. The same parasites also allowed her to track his movements. She leaves Juzo with no choice but to enter the tournament, and only provides the antidote to neutralize the parasites once he reaches the final round.
Throughout the story, the Sergeant interacts with Juzo primarily as a controller and manipulator, viewing him as a valuable asset rather than a person. She shows no concern for his well-being or the lives of any other fighters, caring only about the tournament's success. After KODOKU concludes, she approaches Shozan Matsuo, a legendary karate master, and offers to set the stage for a tournament of his own. Matsuo declines, but he notices her particular interest in his student, Tsutomu Himekawa, suggesting she is already looking ahead to recruit new talent for future events.
In terms of abilities, the Sergeant possesses considerable organizational and strategic intelligence, allowing her to run a global underground fighting circuit and manage a network of informants and enforcers. She has access to advanced medical technology, demonstrated by the parasite implant and nanomachine tracking system. Her true identity and gender remain a secret to most of the underworld, which she uses as a tactical advantage. She is a brilliant promoter who understands how to generate interest, control narratives, and manipulate fighters and audiences alike. She is also a patient and calculating strategist, willing to spend significant time and resources to secure a fighter she wants, as seen in her months-long campaign to recruit Juzo.
