Description
Mr. Hirst serves as the master engineer aboard the HMS Leviathan, the massive Darwinist airship at the center of the story. His technical expertise places him in a key operational role within the engine room, making him responsible for the maintenance and functionality of the ship's complex biological propulsion systems.

In terms of personality, Hirst exhibits a pragmatic and sometimes abrasive demeanor, particularly when interacting with individuals from the opposing Clanker faction. He is not quick to trust or cooperate with those who use machinery rather than fabricated life forms, and his skepticism often manifests as mockery or dismissiveness. This is evident when he scoffs at the significance of a lightning generator, only to be humbled when a Clanker engineer's quick thinking saves the crew from its line of fire. Despite his initial arrogance, Hirst is capable of recognizing competence in others, even if he is reluctant to admit it openly.

Hirst's primary motivation appears to be the successful operation of the Leviathan and the safety of its crew, though his methods for ensuring these goals can be extreme. In a moment of high tension, he fires an air pistol at a fellow engineer named Klopp who is attempting to turn the ship around against orders to avoid a Tesla cannon. The bullet misses its intended target but ricochets and strikes Prince Alek instead. This incident reveals that Hirst is willing to use force to enforce command decisions and protect the ship, even against his own colleagues. Following this event, he does not carry an air pistol while working alongside Alek, suggesting a degree of remorse or a conscious decision to de-escalate his approach.

His role in the story is largely defined by his interactions with the Clanker engineers who come aboard the Leviathan. Initially, he works alongside Klopp, Alek, Hoffman, and Bauer to install the engines from a Cyklop Stormwalker onto the airship. While he manages to establish friendly relationships with these Clankers in the beginning, trust erodes following the shooting incident. Bauer and Hoffman subsequently hold a grudge against him, and Hoffman explicitly states that Hirst will never become a true Clanker engineer. This strained dynamic culminates when Alek and his men escape from the Leviathan, at which point they tie up and gag Hirst to prevent him from interfering.

Despite the lack of confidence his Clanker counterparts have in his abilities, Hirst demonstrates notable technical development over the course of the series. After Alek, Bauer, and Klopp depart from the Leviathan, Hoffman appears to have successfully taught Hirst and the other engineers how to operate the Stormwalker's engines. This indicates that the crew no longer requires direct assistance from the Clankers, showing that Hirst is a capable learner who can adapt to unfamiliar machinery. He later applies his engineering knowledge to communication systems as well, providing an update on a transmission device needed to contact Lord Churchill and noting that an antenna must be attached to the top of the Leviathan.

Hirst also investigates technical components critical to the ship's mission, such as a transmitter component that enables long-distance communication. This involvement in communications technology highlights his versatility as an engineer who can work with both the biological technology native to the Leviathan and the mechanical systems introduced by the Clankers. His ability to integrate these two distinct technological paradigms makes him a valuable, if sometimes volatile, member of the airship's crew.
