Description
Cikapasi is a young Ainu boy who lives in the same village as Asirpa in Hokkaido. His name carries a dual meaning in the Ainu language: “he who makes birds fly” as well as a crude anatomical reference that hints at his personality. Cikapasi is an orphan; his parents and older siblings all died from smallpox, leaving the village elders to raise him. He is a curious child who is easily amazed by great feats, especially hunting skills, and he has a strong interest in hunting himself, always eager to help others during their hunts. Despite living in a close-knit community, he is somewhat of a loner and does not typically play with the other children. He also has a notably immature fascination with women, particularly the fortune teller Inkarmat. His primary motivation is a desire for family and belonging. When Inkarmat and the former soldier Genjirou Tanigaki leave his village, Cikapasi secretly follows them. Caught, he admits he has no one waiting for him at home and asks to join them. Inkarmat agrees, suggesting they pose as a family to appear less suspicious—an idea that excites Cikapasi greatly. He becomes deeply attached to the pair, viewing Tanigaki as a strong father figure and Inkarmat as a maternal figure and the object of his childish crush. Though young and shorter than Asirpa, he is resilient and capable of long journeys, having tracked Tanigaki and Inkarmat all the way to the town of Barato. While he lacks combat abilities, his upbringing as an Ainu has given him basic knowledge of the outdoors and traditional skills. He has a fondness for bean snacks and a dislike for salmon eyeballs.
