Description
Narizō Arisaka is a supporting character in the Golden Kamuy story, appearing in both the anime and the subsequent live-action series. He is a lieutenant general in the Imperial Japanese Army and is widely regarded as a genius arms designer. His most famous creations include the Type 30 infantry rifle, commonly known as the Arisaka rifle, and the Type 28 howitzer, both of which saw extensive use during the Russo-Japanese War and contributed significantly to Japan’s victory. Arisaka is an older man with greying hair swept back, thick eyebrows, heavy eyelids, and a distinctive handlebar mustache. Decades of working with firearms have caused severe noise-induced hearing loss, which forces him to speak in a very loud voice regardless of the situation, a trait that makes him seem eccentric to others. Despite his high military rank, he is not directly involved in the central conflict over the Ainu gold; instead, his role is that of a benefactor and supplier to Lieutenant General Tokushirō Tsurumi. Arisaka shares a long-standing friendship with Tsurumi, who openly praises his inventions, and he frequently provides Tsurumi’s faction with new prototype weapons, such as the Type 38 machine gun and the Type 38 infantry rifle, as well as advanced prosthetic limbs. He also takes a personal interest in Tsurumi’s subordinate Kōhei Nikaidō, visiting him in the hospital, fitting him with artificial legs and arms after his injuries, and even giving him methamphetamine to lift his spirits. Arisaka’s motivations are not tied to the gold hunt; rather, he is driven by a passion for firearm development and a sense of camaraderie with those who appreciate his work. His character does not undergo significant development over the course of the story, remaining a consistent and colorful presence as a genius inventor and a loyal, if somewhat unorthodox, ally to Tsurumi.
