Description
Kazuo Maeyama is a minor but notable character in Golden Kamuy, serving as a member of the Seventh Division of the Imperial Japanese Army. His physical appearance is distinctive; he is depicted as a fairly plump man with a shaved head, oval eyebrows, dark eyes with long eyelashes, a round nose, and full lips. He also sports a mustache with a small tuft of beard on his chin, and typically wears the standard Imperial Japanese Army uniform and cap.

Maeyama's background is rooted in his military service. He was a comrade of the sniper Hyakunosuke Ogata, having fought alongside him in the trenches during the Russo-Japanese War. In Meiji 38, which corresponds to 1905, Maeyama took part in the Battle of Mukden. It was there that he witnessed a pivotal event involving his fellow soldiers. When Second Lieutenant Tokushiro Tsurumi was struck by a subordinate, Maeyama attempted to intervene and restrain the attacker, only to be elbowed in the face for his efforts. This incident likely contributed to the complex dynamics he would later share with his superiors.

In terms of personality, Kazuo Maeyama is characterized primarily by his dutiful and practical nature. He is loyal to First Lieutenant Tsurumi and demonstrates a clear preference for efficiency and focus on assigned tasks. He disapproves of wasting time on frivolous or unauthorized activities, suggesting a no-nonsense attitude toward his responsibilities.

Maeyama's main role in the story occurs during the Edogai Arc. He is assigned by First Lieutenant Tsurumi, alongside Sergeant Hajime Tsukishima, to monitor the activities of Yasaku Edogai, a skilled but unstable taxidermist hired to replicate the tattooed skins that hold the key to the hidden Ainu gold. In this capacity, Maeyama and Tsukishima are largely silent observers, enduring Edogai's frequent tantrums and outbursts of frustration. On one occasion, when Edogai presents a mounted head of Tsurumi as a strange form of apology, Maeyama scolds him, ordering him to focus on his work instead, which only further upsets the volatile craftsman.

His key relationships are defined by his military connections. He is a subordinate of both First Lieutenant Tsurumi and Sergeant Tsukishima, carrying out his orders without question. His past as a fellow soldier of Ogata is particularly significant, as it forms the basis for his eventual demise. While no detailed development is afforded to such a minor character, his death serves as a stark narrative beat. While looking out of a window in Edogai's workshop, Maeyama is killed by a single sniper shot. The shooter is later revealed to be his former comrade, Hyakunosuke Ogata, whose own mysterious goals put him in direct opposition to Tsurumi's faction. The sound of Maeyama's body hitting the floor alerts Edogai, who then discovers him dead. As a soldier, notable abilities are assumed to be standard military training with a rifle, though he is ultimately outmatched by the superior sniping skills of Ogata.
