Description
Ekurok is a minor antagonist in the story, first appearing as a resident of an Ainu village before his true nature is revealed. His name holds meaning within the Ainu language, as Ekurok translates to black. He is an escaped convict from Kabato Prison, who later becomes known for cruelly impersonating an Ainu person to hide his criminal identity.

In terms of appearance, Ekurok is depicted with shoulder-length dark hair, which he typically keeps under an Ainu headband as part of his disguise. He has a gaunt face characterized by forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, tear troughs, and a dark beard. He wears traditional Ainu clothing to maintain his false persona. On the surface, Ekurok presents himself as a friendly and welcoming individual, greeting visitors to the village and offering them hospitality. However, this demeanor is entirely deceptive, masking a cruel and dishonest nature. He is a calculating impostor who uses the appearance of peace to lower the guards of his victims.

The background of Ekurok reveals his criminal origins. He was once an inmate at Kabato Prison but managed to escape alongside a large group of convicts with the assistance of a man named Kiyohiro Suzukawa. After their escape, this group of fugitives came upon an Ainu village and violently took it over. They forced the women of the village to become their wives and established a murderous routine. Whenever travelers or visitors arrived, Ekurok and the other impostors would make them feel welcome, get them drunk, and then kill them in their sleep.

In the story, Ekurok plays the role of an antagonist during the Con Artists Arc. His village is visited by Sugimoto's group, including Asirpa, Saichi Sugimoto, Tatsuma Ushiyama, and Hyakunosuke Ogata. Ekurok attempts to deceive them with his friendly act, explaining away his fluent Japanese by claiming he once worked unloading cargo for Japanese people. He introduces the other convicts as his family, including a man posing as his father, Retanno Ekasi. The deception begins to unravel when Asirpa uses the Ainu word musonkami, which translates to help me, immediately raising suspicion. When Ogata presses for the meaning of the word, Ekurok and his accomplices remain silent and grim, eventually lying that Ainu has many dialects. Ekurok attempts to cover for the inconsistencies, but his lies fail against the growing suspicions of the group. A critical moment occurs when a captive Ainu woman cries out for help from a window, exposing the true situation. When the violence begins, Ekurok dives for Sugimoto's rifle after his brother is killed, but he is shot in the back by Ogata, who cruelly mocks him by asking how people beg for their lives in the Ainu language. Following this, he is grabbed by the powerful Ushiyama and thrown at two convicts who were preparing to shoot from a window, knocking them over. Ekurok is ultimately killed in the ensuing fight and is buried alongside his brother, the fellow convict Chouan Kumagishi, and the other criminals who died opposing Sugimoto's group.

Key relationships for Ekurok include his fellow escaped convicts, particularly the man posing as his brother and the one acting as his father, Retanno Ekasi. These men are not actual family but co-conspirators in the takeover of the village. His primary dynamic is with Sugimoto's group, whom he attempts to deceive and kill but who ultimately defeat him. His development is limited, as he serves as a short-term antagonist who is introduced and eliminated within a single arc of the story. There is no indication of redemption or significant change; his role is to highlight the dangers lurking in the wilderness of Hokkaido and to demonstrate the brutal, survivalist nature of many escaped convicts. Regarding notable abilities, Ekurok does not possess any exceptional combat skills or unique physical prowess. His primary ability is his skill in deception and impersonation, successfully mimicking Ainu customs and language well enough to fool travelers and maintain control over a village for a period of time. He is also proficient in the use of firearms, as he immediately resorts to diving for a rifle when his cover is blown.
