Description
Heihachirō Ikuma is a character from the Ring series, with his role detailed across multiple films including Ring 0: Birthday and the 1998 film Ring. He is known as the presumed father or stepfather of the central figure Sadako Yamamura, having been the lover of her mother, Shizuko Yamamura. In the films, his background is tied to a relationship with Shizuko while he was working as a professor at Tokyo University. After Shizuko's suicide, Ikuma took on the responsibility of caring for her daughter, Sadako.

Personality-wise, Heihachirō Ikuma is a complex figure whose primary motivation is a deep-seated fear of Sadako's supernatural powers. This fear ultimately overrides any paternal affection he might hold, driving him to commit a horrific act. He displays a strategic and determined nature, planning his actions carefully in response to what he perceives as an existential threat. There is a sense of deep internal conflict within him, as his final actions are shown to cause him profound sorrow, suggesting he is not a simple villain but a man pushed to a terrible decision by his terror.

In the story, Ikuma's role is that of a guardian who becomes a key figure in Sadako's tragic origin. In Ring 0: Birthday, the events leading up to his infamous act are explored. The narrative reveals that Sadako had split into two beings: a gentle, benign girl and a malevolent, powerful psychic entity. Ikuma allowed the gentle Sadako to grow and attend school normally while keeping the evil Sadako locked away, feeding her growth-inhibiting hormones to keep her in the form of a child. At the climax of the film, the two Sadakos merge into one, and in his fear, Ikuma tricks her into drinking poison before striking her with an axe and disposing of her body in a well. This act is later confessed to the investigators Reiko Asakawa and Ryuji Takayama in the 1998 film Ring, where he reveals the history of his stepdaughter. Heihachirō Ikuma is also noted to have a key relationship with Shizuko Yamamura as her lover and the mother of his child. He later dies of tuberculosis or a similar disease after the traumatic events at the well. He has no notable supernatural abilities of his own, his actions being driven by human fear and desperation rather than any psychic power.
