Description
Izuna Hazuki is a character from the supernatural horror-comedy series Jigoku Sensei Nube, known as Hell Teacher Nube. She is a teenager with a unique profession, working as an Itako, which is a traditional Japanese spiritual medium with the ability to communicate with the dead and perceive the spirit world. In the narrative, she is also referred to as a Reibaishi, or a spiritual medium who exorcises evil spirits for a living.
At the age of seventeen, Izuna is a high school girl who has come to the city to make a living by using her spiritual talents. Her primary motivation is to use her abilities as a medium to help people who are being tormented by supernatural forces. The evil spirits she confronts often prey on human weaknesses, such as insecurities, emotional stress, and personal vulnerabilities, amplifying negative energy until it causes harm to individuals or the surrounding community. Her role in the story is that of an exorcist who shines a light into the darkness between fantasy and reality, dealing with cases that range from spirits turning young girls into arsonists to those that manipulate men's darker desires.
In terms of personality, Izuna is generally depicted as a capable and determined individual, though some portrayals highlight a more ditzy or amateurish side to her character, suggesting that her spells or methods can sometimes be imperfect and lead to additional complications. Despite this, she is a dedicated exorcist who relies on her own inherent abilities and her partnership with a spiritual companion.
One of Izuna's most notable abilities is her connection to a Kuda, or Kuda-gitsune, which is a fox-like spirit pet. This familiar serves as her partner in her line of work, helping her to detect the presence of evil spirits and assisting in their destruction. This ability is significant enough that the main protagonist, the teacher Nube, borrows her Kuda-gitsune to create his own spiritual familiar.
Izuna's relationship with the series' main character, Meisuke Nueno, also known as Nube, is a key part of her role. She is one of the exorcists operating in the same world as Nube, and their paths cross as they both deal with supernatural threats. Nube has borrowed her spiritual tools, indicating a professional relationship between the two mediums. She also has a connection to the students of Domori Elementary, who are fascinated by her performances as a medium and view her spiritual work as exciting magic tricks.
Regarding her development, Izuna Hazuki is the central character of her own spin-off manga series titled Reibaishi Izuna, which takes place in an alternate timeline from the main Jigoku Sensei Nube story. In this spin-off, she is the protagonist, and the narrative explores her adventures as a spiritual medium in greater depth. The series was later followed by a sequel, Reibaishi Izuna: Ascension, which continues her story. In the live-action television drama adaptation of Jigoku Sensei Nube, she was portrayed by actress Mizuki Yamamoto.
