Live action TV
Description
Karin Kanatomo is a minor character who appears exclusively in the second episode of the live-action film series Death Note: New Generation. She is a young Japanese woman with brown eyes and short, chin-length brown hair with bangs. In her daily life, she presents an upbeat personality and performs as an online content creator, specifically a livestreamer who dances to pop music while wearing a smiling animal mask that covers the lower half of her face.

Karin is depicted as a dedicated fan of a band called Hakka Bees, as evidenced by the numerous ticket stubs she possesses and the stickers of the band that cover her laptop. Her apartment walls are decorated with posters of young female performers, suggesting a strong interest in idol culture. This fandom plays a central role in her motivations within the story, as she actively engages in online discussions about music. Her last known public interaction is a heated argument with another user, Kimagure Zetsubou, over whether her favorite band, Hakka Bees, is superior to a girl group named Metal Dolls. This argument is what ultimately draws her into the conflict of the series.

Karin’s role in Death Note: New Generation is that of a victim. Her death serves as the inciting incident for the main investigators. During a routine livestream where she is dancing to a song by Hakka Bees, she is suddenly controlled by a Death Note wielded by a user named Sakura Aoi. Karin stops dancing and, as her final act, speaks an anagram for the phrase "Kira, I have it too" before walking off-camera and fatally stabbing herself with a knife. The video of her death quickly draws the attention of both the detective J and the cyber-terrorist Yuki Shien.

Her key relationships are primarily defined by this singular, fatal online interaction. While she does not have a personal connection to Sakura Aoi, their exchange over band preferences on an internet message board leads Sakura to bait Karin into revealing her face, after which Sakura writes her name in the Death Note. Her death is instrumental in the story's development, directly leading the detective Ryuzaki to break into her apartment to investigate. While there, Ryuzaki uses her computer to communicate with Sakura, which finally prompts him to formally collaborate with the Japanese Task Force to hunt for the new Kira. Her recorded death is also a pivotal clue for Yuki Shien, who hacks her laptop in an attempt to track down the Death Note user.

Karin Kanatomo does not undergo any meaningful character development, as she is killed only a few minutes after her introduction. Her notable abilities are not supernatural or combative but relate to her civilian life; she is a capable and charismatic livestreamer who can perform dance routines and engage with an online audience. The only other aspect of her character that stands out is her strong, if ultimately fatal, loyalty to her musical tastes.
