Description
Maria is a mask artisan based in Venice, where she runs her own workshop and is preparing for her upcoming wedding. In her youth, she was the child of a beggar who froze to death outside a restaurant. The incident occurred because a young man refused to share his food with her father, resulting in the beggar's death. The man later confessed this sin to Rohan Kishibe inside a church confessional, revealing that the beggar's ghost had cursed him to be killed at his happiest moment. Maria is unaware of this curse for most of the story, living her life normally as a skilled craftswoman. She becomes the focal point of the curse when the ghost, seeking vengeance through the bloodline, targets her wedding as the moment of greatest happiness for the confessor's family. Maria is depicted as a gentle, unsuspecting individual who becomes entangled in a supernatural predicament. She has no innate abilities related to the supernatural, but her profession as a mask maker symbolizes the theme of hidden identities and appearances. Her role in the story is to represent the innocent parties caught in the consequences of others' past sins. Rohan Kishibe encounters her and deduces that she is the same girl from the confessor's story, now grown up. Her wedding ceremony becomes the stage where the curse threatens to manifest, turning a moment of joy into potential tragedy. Maria's development is limited to her confrontation with this revelation, but she remains primarily a catalyst for Rohan's investigation and the story's resolution. She does not undergo significant personal change beyond the immediate threat to her life being averted.
