Description
In the anime "Cells at Work!", the character known as Myelocyte appears primarily in a flashback during the episode "Erythroblasts and Myelocytes". Myelocytes are immature white blood cell precursors that have not yet differentiated into a specific type of granulocyte, such as a neutrophil, eosinophil, or basophil. They reside in the red bone marrow, where they develop and eventually mature into fully functional white blood cells. The specific Myelocyte shown in the series is the younger form of the main white blood cell character, U-1146. His background is rooted in his time as a developing cell in the bone marrow, where he already displays a strong sense of justice and a protective nature. His primary motivation is to defend the body from harmful invaders, even before he has fully matured. In the story, his role is crucial in illustrating the origins of U-1146’s bravery and moral compass. When the young erythroblast AE3803 is captured by a Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterium, the Myelocyte intervenes, refusing the bacterium’s offer to spare him if he hands over the erythroblast. Although he is no match for the pathogen and is defeated, his courageous stand buys enough time for a macrophage and a more mature neutrophil to arrive and eliminate the threat. This act establishes a direct, formative relationship between him and AE3803, as she later suspects that the Myelocyte who saved her grew up to become U-1146. His character arc is therefore one of development from an untrained, yet principled, immature cell into the dedicated and reliable neutrophil that appears throughout the series. In terms of abilities, the Myelocyte possesses the potential of a future white blood cell, but at his stage he lacks the combat proficiency and experience of a mature granulocyte; nonetheless, his willingness to fight and his refusal to betray another cell highlight his inherent strength of character.
