TV-Series
Description
Myaa is a cat character introduced in the 1987 expansion of the NHK educational segment Konna Ko Iru ka na, which originally aired from 1986 to 1991. She appears alongside Pero, a dog, as a pair of supporting figures who are distinct from the twelve main child characters. Myaa’s design in the picture book and television versions differs slightly: in the picture book she has black ears and tail and is bipedal, while in the animated shorts her ears and tail are a darker brown and she is often shown moving on all fours like a real cat. Her personality is intentionally plain and unexaggerated, serving as a neutral contrast to the strong, often negative traits displayed by the main cast such as stubbornness, fearfulness, or greed. This ordinariness helps highlight the individuality of the twelve children. Myaa’s primary motivation is simply to go about her daily life with Pero, interacting with the other characters in a calm, unremarkable manner. She does not undergo personal growth or change across the series; her role is static, providing a stable, everyday presence. In terms of relationships, she is frequently paired with Pero, and the two are depicted as a close pair, sometimes described as like a couple. They refer to the main characters with the suffix -chan in the picture books, but in the anime they drop the honorific. Myaa has no special abilities beyond typical cat behaviors—she occasionally eats, walks, and plays—and she is noticeably smaller than the twelve main characters, though her exact age in relation to them is never stated. Overall, Myaa functions as a gentle, ordinary foil within a world of highly defined personalities, reinforcing the show’s message that all kinds of children exist and are valuable.
