Description
Akari Yoshiyama is the central protagonist of the 2010 live-action Japanese film. She is a high school student on the verge of graduation, preparing to enter university to study pharmacy, following in the professional footsteps of her mother, Kazuko Yoshiyama. Akari is the daughter of Kazuko, the original protagonist from the classic time travel story, and lives primarily with her mother.

In terms of personality, Akari is portrayed as a cheerful, brave, and energetic young woman, though she can also be somewhat careless and impetuous. Her spirited nature often manifests as enthusiasm for her goals, but her lack of caution is a key character trait that drives the plot forward. For instance, her tendency to act without fully considering the consequences leads her to make a critical error when she mispronounces a date, causing her to travel to the wrong year. Despite this occasional clumsiness, she possesses a deep well of inner strength and determination, especially when it comes to helping her family.

Akari’s primary motivation stems from a family crisis. After her mother is involved in a serious car accident and falls into a coma, Kazuko briefly awakens and gives her daughter a mission. She instructs Akari to travel back in time to the year 1972 to deliver a message to Kazuo Fukamachi, a man who was her mother's first love. Driven by love for her mother and a sense of urgency, Akari accepts this task without hesitation, demonstrating her loyalty and courage.

Her role in the story is that of a messenger who becomes an active participant in the past. Upon arriving in 1974, two years later than intended, she finds herself stranded and reliant on the kindness of a stranger, an aspiring film director named Ryota Mizorogi. While trying to locate Kazuo, she becomes entangled in the lives of the people she meets in the 1970s. This includes not only developing a poignant romantic connection with Ryota but also encountering her own father when he was a young man. Her mission thus transforms from a simple errand into a personal journey of love, loss, and self-discovery.

Key relationships define her journey. Her relationship with her mother, Kazuko, is the catalyst for the entire plot, with Akari risking everything to fulfill her mother's unspoken wish. The most significant relationship she forms is with Ryota Mizorogi, a kind-hearted and passionate young man who gives her shelter and helps her search for Kazuo. Their bond deepens into a tender romance, made tragic by their existence in different timelines. Another crucial relationship is with Kazuo Fukamachi, the man she is sent to find. He is a time traveler himself, and from him, she learns the fundamental rules and heavy consequences of altering the past, including the necessity of having her memories erased to preserve the timeline.

Throughout the narrative, Akari undergoes significant development. She begins as a somewhat ordinary and carefree teenager focused on her exams and her future. However, the experience of time travel forces her to mature rapidly. She learns about the weight of responsibility, the pain of sacrifice, and the unchangeable nature of certain events. Her journey mirrors that of her mother, as she ultimately must say goodbye to the person she loves, understanding that their relationship cannot exist in a stable timeline. This experience leaves a profound, albeit subconscious, mark on her, as evidenced by the final scene where she watches a silent film given to her by Ryota and cries without fully understanding why.

Akari’s notable ability is the power to travel through time, which she gains by consuming a special formula created by her mother. Unlike some depictions of time travel that allow for repeated jumps, in this story, the power is tied to a specific liquid, and the act of traveling is a singular, major event. Her ability is not a superpower she controls at will but a tool used for a specific purpose, highlighting the film's focus on the emotional and ethical dimensions of time travel rather than the mechanics of the power itself. Her journey using this ability ultimately reinforces the theme that some memories, even when lost, can leave an indelible emotional imprint on a person.
