TV-Series
Description
Kaya, a civilian within Wall Rose, loses her mother during a Titan attack when their village is evacuated. Her mother's impaired mobility causes both to be left behind as Titans invade. Witnessing her mother devoured leaves Kaya in shock until Sasha Braus rescues her. Their escape horse flees, forcing them to proceed on foot. Sasha instructs Kaya to continue alone while she stays to fight the Titan. Kaya later encounters survivors and directs them to help Sasha.
After these events, the Braus family takes Kaya in on their farm. She develops profound admiration for Sasha, aspiring to emulate her bravery and selflessness. Following Sasha's death in 854, Kaya mourns at her grave alongside Sasha's parents.
While walking the Braus dogs later, Kaya overhears an argument between Gabi Braun and Falco Grice. Assuming they are hungry, she invites them to the farm for a meal. During the meal, Kaya reveals she knows they are from Marley, having overheard their earlier conversation, but assures them she won't turn them in. She challenges Gabi's justification for her mother's death, emphasizing her mother never left Paradis Island. Falco explains the invasion stemmed from Marley's infiltration and apologizes; Kaya states he bears no responsibility for his nation's actions.
Driven by her desire to be like Sasha, Kaya helps Gabi and Falco seek aid from Nicolo, a Marleyan working at a restaurant. At the meal, Nicolo reveals Gabi killed Sasha and urges Mr. Braus to take revenge. When Mr. Braus refuses, Kaya grabs a knife to stab Gabi but is restrained by a Scout. She breaks down as her adoptive parents comfort her.
Subsequently, the Braus family and others are captured by Jaegerists and imprisoned in Shiganshina. Freed during a Marleyan attack, the family flees with Nicolo. Seeking shelter, Kaya expresses her unresolved desire to avenge Sasha by killing Gabi and Falco. Separated during another Titan encounter, Kaya is cornered in an alley but saved by Gabi, whom she initially mistakes for Sasha. When soldiers question Gabi's identity, Kaya protects her by claiming Gabi is family. Escorted to safety, both girls reflect: Kaya labels herself a "devil" for her murder attempt, while Gabi admits her own violent actions for praise. Nicolo consoles them, explaining everyone harbors inner darkness and must strive to overcome it.
Kaya later bids farewell to Gabi as she departs with Armin. Three years after the Rumbling and Eren Jaeger's death, Kaya walks with the Braus family and Nicolo near a Jaegerist ceremony.
Calm, quiet, and reserved, Kaya forms bonds slowly. Her admiration for Sasha drives her to help others indiscriminately, even former enemies. This kindness coexists with a capacity for rage when loved ones are harmed, evident in her violent reaction to Sasha's death. Her experiences with Gabi and Falco lead her to confront the complexities of vengeance and forgiveness. Her name means "rock" in Turkish and "rich" in Indonesian and Malay.
