Live-Action TV
Description
Hina Kusaka is a character created specifically for the live-action television series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, and she plays a significant role in the story leading up to the events depicted in the special DVD release, Act Zero. Her background is deeply intertwined with that of Mamoru Chiba. She is the daughter of the wealthy man who acts as Mamoru’s benefactor, paying for his education and supporting him. Because of this connection, Hina and Mamoru have known each other since childhood, and their families arranged for them to be engaged.

In terms of personality, Hina is portrayed as a very kind, generous, and sincere young woman. Her genuine nature is such that even Usagi Tsukino, who is in love with Mamoru, finds it impossible to feel jealous of her. She is observant and perceptive, eventually recognizing the deep connection forming between Mamoru and Usagi, though she initially says nothing about it.

Hina’s primary motivation throughout the main story is her love for Mamoru and her desire for their future together, which includes plans to study abroad in London. However, she becomes increasingly concerned by Mamoru’s distant and distracted behavior. Her journey involves coming to terms with the fact that, despite their lifelong bond and engagement, Mamoru’s true feelings lie elsewhere. This realization culminates in her decision to break off the engagement and stay in Japan, allowing Mamoru to go to London alone as a way to free him from his obligation to her.

Within the story, Hina serves as a significant obstacle and a catalyst for emotional growth for both Usagi and Mamoru. Her presence as the fiancée devastates Usagi, who is forced to confront her own feelings of hopelessness upon seeing how kind Hina is and how happy Mamoru appears with her. For Mamoru, she represents his past and a sense of duty. Her ultimate decision to step aside is a selfless act that clears the path for the central relationship of the series.

Key relationships define Hina’s role. Her relationship with Mamoru Chiba is the most central, as his childhood promise to marry her keeps them bound together even as he grows apart from her. She also forms a brief but important friendship with Usagi Tsukino, initially unaware of Usagi’s feelings for Mamoru. Furthermore, she is acquainted with Motoki Furuhata, who inadvertently reveals the truth about Mamoru’s feelings in front of her.

Hina’s character undergoes significant development, with her final appearance in the main series being a mature and poignant farewell. Her story, however, continues in the Act Zero DVD. A short film titled Hina Afterwards shows her life after the breakup. In this sequel, Hina has become an actress working on a television drama called Tuxedo Knight, where the titular hero bears a strong resemblance to Tuxedo Mask. She finds herself developing feelings for the actor playing this role, though she is uncertain if her emotions are influenced by her character in the show. This development suggests she has moved on from her past with Mamoru and is finding new happiness, even as she looks toward a person who reminds her of him. Hina does not possess any supernatural abilities, magic, or combat skills, as she is a normal human civilian throughout the series.
