Masako Kamiki is the mother of the Kamiki family in the horror story Sayuri. She is the wife of Akio Kamiki and the mother of their children: Keiko, Norio, and Shun, and she lives with her mother-in-law Harue and father-in-law Kitaro. The family moves into a spacious countryside home, hopeful for a new beginning. Masako is initially presented as a warm and caring mother who enjoys the family’s shared meals and laughter. As strange and violent paranormal events begin to unfold, she becomes increasingly frightened and desperate, trying to hold the family together despite the escalating horror. After witnessing the death of her husband Akio, the mysterious demise of her father-in-law Kitaro, the fall of her youngest son Shun, and her daughter Keiko’s self-inflicted fatal injury, Masako’s grief and despair overwhelm her. In a final act of surrender to the haunting, she strangles herself with an electrical cord, leaving only Norio and Harue alive. Her role in the story is that of a loving mother who is ultimately crushed by the supernatural forces her family cannot escape. She has no special abilities; her significance lies in her emotional journey from hope to devastation, highlighting the cost of the family’s entanglement with the vengeful spirit inhabiting their home.
