Description
Iyu Hoshino, also known as Crow Amazon, is a central figure from the second season of the series. She is a sixteen-year-old girl with an outwardly unassuming appearance, characterized by her long dark hair and tan skin. Her most defining physical feature in her human form is her right eye, which is a cybernetic implant. This prosthetic replaces the eye she lost during the traumatic event that led to her death.
Iyu’s existence is a tragic one. She was once a normal, cheerful girl who excelled at baking and laughed often. This life ended on her father's birthday when he underwent a sudden and violent Amazon transformation, killing and consuming his entire family. Iyu was discovered by Takeshi Kurosaki during the aftermath. Although she was still alive, she died from her injuries while being transported for medical care. To compensate for a shortage of Amazon fighters, the organization 4C was granted permission to resurrect her as a Sigma-Type Amazon. This process involved implanting Amazon Cells into her deceased body, bringing her back as a reanimated corpse and a living weapon known as the Crow Amazon.
As a Sigma-Type, Iyu was reborn without the ability to feel physical pain and, more significantly, without emotions. Her personality is marked by a persistent deadpan demeanor and a complete lack of expressiveness. She operates on a purely functional level, following orders from her superiors, particularly Takeshi Kurosaki, without question or hesitation. Her speech is terse and mission-focused, and she shows no concern for whether she is treated as a person or a biological weapon. Despite this emotional void, fragments of her past life linger subconsciously. She has been known to hum a song her father used to sing, suggesting that her humanity is buried deep within her, waiting to be awakened.
In the story, Iyu serves as the primary field asset for Team Kurosaki, acting as both a sensor to detect other Amazons and a powerful combatant. Her role becomes deeply intertwined with that of Chihiro, also known as Amazon Neo. Chihiro becomes obsessed with Iyu because she is the first human he does not feel the urge to devour, a fact later revealed to be because she is technically dead. He joins 4C on the condition that Iyu be treated humanely, and he is assigned to her team. Chihiro’s persistent efforts to make Iyu more human, such as taking her to an amusement park, buying her cake, and showing her photographs, slowly begin to chip away at her emotional block. He treats her as a person, not a weapon, which creates the first cracks in her emotionless exterior.
Her most significant relationships are with Chihiro and her commander, Takeshi Kurosaki. To Kurosaki, she is initially a dutiful tool, a weapon to be aimed and fired at their Amazon targets. Chihiro, however, sees the girl she once was and yearns to bring her back. This dynamic creates the central conflict for her character. When Chihiro’s own Amazon hunger spirals out of control and he goes on a rampage, Kurosaki re-programs Iyu to hunt him as her primary target. She dutifully pursues Chihiro, but her human side truly begins to emerge when she witnesses him being brutally beaten by Jin Takayama. In a direct violation of her orders, she attacks Jin and rescues Chihiro, questioning him if his injuries hurt, an act of empathy that shocks and elates him.
Iyu’s emotional development culminates in tragedy. As she and Chihiro flee, her Neo Amazons Register is remotely activated to begin a self-destruct sequence. While waiting for the end, she fully recalls the horror of her death at her father’s hands. The sudden rush of traumatic memory and intense pain she should have felt causes her to lose control and go on a berserk rampage, attacking friend and foe alike. She is eventually calmed by Chihiro, weeping in his arms as she relives her past agony. As her body breaks down from the self-destruct system, Chihiro takes her to a place of significance from her childhood. For the first time since her resurrection, Iyu genuinely smiles and expresses happiness before she finally closes her eyes and permanently ceases to function.
As Crow Amazon, Iyu transforms using her Neo Amazons Register. Her Amazon form is a monstrous avian-themed creature with sharp talons, a fan of feather-like spines, and a single functioning eye, a permanent scar from her father’s attack. Unlike the heavily armored Alpha or Omega, the Crow Amazon form emphasizes incredible speed, agility, and acrobatic combat techniques. She fights with a flurry of kicks and flips, using her claws to deliver devastating blows. Due to her nature as a Sigma-Type, she does not feel pain, allowing her to continue fighting through grievous injuries that would incapacitate any normal combatant. Her strength and recovery are tied to protein consumption, which is the fuel for her Amazon biology. While she possesses no special long-range weapons, her physical prowess and relentless, painless assault make her an exceptionally dangerous fighter. When her suppressed emotions finally return, they trigger a berserker state where her power becomes even more chaotic and uncontrollable.
