Description
Chiharu Kazami is a central figure in the 2007 film Kamen Rider The Next, serving as a tragic antagonist whose fate is intertwined with the rise of the villainous organization Shocker. She is the younger sister of Shiro Kazami, the man who becomes the cyborg hero Kamen Rider V3. Before the events of the story, Chiharu was a popular and rising Japanese pop idol. Her career was managed by the talent agency Tristar Promotions, and she was known for her song Platinum Smile.

Chiharu's transformation from a cheerful performer into a vengeful specter is rooted in a series of cruel and unfortunate events. On the same day her brother was transformed into V3, Chiharu was exposed to experimental nanobots during a Shocker operation at the ExaStream building. Unaware of the infection, she left the building before it was quarantined. Shortly after, while at her agency, rival idols pushed her down a flight of stairs. She landed on a live electrical circuit, which severely disfigured her face. Unable to cope with the trauma and her ruined appearance, Chiharu committed suicide, leaving a note asking for her wristwatch to be sent to her brother.

To protect their financial investment, the executives at Tristar Promotions, including President Shindo and manager Yamazaki, covered up her death. They disposed of her body in the city sewers and used the very rivals who caused her accident as replacements, surgically altering them to continue performing as Chiharu. However, the nanobots within her corpse malfunctioned in the sewers, reviving her as a sub-human, ghostly monster. Her face remained partially concealed by long, disheveled hair, hiding the scars of her disfigurement.

Motivated by a deep, sorrowful rage, Chiharu's primary goal becomes one of retribution. She unconsciously or deliberately targets anyone who listens to her final song, Platinum Smile, which was released posthumously by the imposters. She brutally murders the fake Chiharus, the agency executives who exploited her, and anyone else complicit in the cover-up. Despite her monstrous actions, a fragment of her original self remains, as she also seeks to warn her brother about Shocker's plan to use the nanobots to remodel all of Japan's citizens. She uses her keepsake wristwatch to send him a message.

Her relationship with her brother, Shiro Kazami, is the emotional core of the story. He initially believes she is alive but soon uncovers the horrifying truth. In the film's climax, Kazami is forced to confront the wretched creature his sister has become. In an emotional confrontation, the dying Chiharu pleads with her brother to end her suffering. He honors her wish, destroying her with a Rider Punch. In her final moment, she finds peace and smiles before disappearing.

Chiharu's role in the story is that of a sympathetic antagonist and a catalyst for the plot. Her curse drives the horror-mystery narrative, while her connection to Shiro Kazami brings him into conflict with Shocker and ultimately leads him to ally with the other Kamen Riders, Takeshi Hongo and Hayato Ichimonji. Her development is a tragic arc from a hopeful young woman to a victim of corporate greed and scientific horror, and finally to a vengeful monster who still yearns for her brother's love and mercy.

As a result of her revival, Chiharu possesses notable supernatural abilities. She can appear and disappear like a ghost, making her an elusive and terrifying figure. Her primary method of killing is tied to her song; listening to Platinum Smile seems to summon her or mark a person for death. She is physically powerful and capable of brutally murdering multiple people. Even after her apparent death at her brother's hands, the curse of Platinum Smile appears to linger, suggesting that her vengeful spirit or the corrupted nanobots that reanimated her may not be entirely destroyed.
