Description
Kotomi Kikuma is a high school student whose life becomes entangled with the secret war between the heroic Kamen Riders and the evil organization Shocker. Before the events of the story, she shared a close friendship with Chiharu, a rising pop idol. When Chiharu vanishes and a series of bizarre deaths is linked to her song Platinum Smile, Kotomi is one of the few civilians who instinctively senses that something is deeply wrong. Troubled by her friend's disappearance and the urban legends surrounding the cursed song, she decides to investigate.
Her homeroom teacher is Takeshi Hongo, who is secretly the cyborg Kamen Rider 1. Kotomi turns to him for help after witnessing strange occurrences and surviving an attack by Shocker agents. This request pulls her deeper into a dangerous reality. Over the course of the film, she actively searches for Chiharu, locates multiple imposters, and gradually uncovers the tragic truth: the real Chiharu was disfigured in an accident, died by suicide, and her record label forced the responsible parties to pose as her in order to release the song, while Shocker later revived and mutated Chiharu's body with experimental nanobots.
Kotomi's primary motivation is a blend of loyalty to her missing friend and a growing need to understand the terrifying events happening around her. She is driven not by curiosity alone but by genuine concern and a sense of responsibility toward Chiharu. As a normal human with no special powers or combat training, she relies on her perceptiveness, emotional resilience, and trust in Hongo to survive. This makes her a grounded counterpoint to the superhuman Riders.
Throughout the film, Kotomi functions as the emotional anchor and as a bridge between the unaware civilian world and the hidden conflict. Her presence reminds the Riders, particularly Hongo, that their battle is fought to protect ordinary lives like hers. She witnesses their sacrifices firsthand, and her survival at the end of the story serves as a symbol of the humanity they defend. Her character arc moves from initial fear and confusion to quiet strength, as she transforms from a frightened schoolgirl into a determined witness who helps expose the conspiracy and ultimately sees the tragedy of Chiharu's fate through to its conclusion.
Kotomi's key relationships define her role. Her former friendship with Chiharu is the emotional core that propels the plot. The sisterly bond they shared before Chiharu's downfall gives Kotomi the resolve to keep searching even when it places her in mortal danger. Her relationship with Takeshi Hongo is that of a student and a protector: she confides in him, he shields her from Shocker's hunters, and through her he reconnects with the human side of his duty. The film also pairs her indirectly with Chiharu's brother Shiro Kazami, the unwilling cyborg V3, as both are driven by their care for the same person. Kotomi is targeted precisely because she gets too close to the truth, placing her in the crosshairs of Shocker operatives like Chainsaw Lizard. Her ability to endure these threats and keep moving forward despite having no means to fight back illustrates a quiet but essential form of courage.
