Description
Chihiro Ayasato is a defense attorney and the head of the Ayasato Law Offices. Known as a legendary figure in the legal world, she is the mentor who guides the protagonist and the older sister of his assistant. Her skills in the courtroom are exceptional, and she is also a member of a family of spirit mediums, possessing the ability to channel the dead, a power that becomes central to her role after her untimely death.

Born into the main branch of the Ayasato family, which runs a spirit channeling village, Chihiro grew up witnessing a bitter rivalry for the position of family head. Her mother disappeared after a scandal involving a botched spirit channeling, leaving Chihiro and her younger sister, Mayoi, effectively orphaned. This series of events led Chihiro to abandon her claim as heir to the family’s spiritual legacy. She chose to leave the village and pursue a career in law, driven by a deep-seated desire to uncover the truth about her mother’s downfall and to carve her own path independent of the family’s politics.

Chihiro is characterized by her sharp intelligence, unwavering tenacity, and remarkable composure under pressure. She carries herself with a calm and professional demeanor in court, often serving as the voice of reason and a source of immense strategic insight. Despite her serious and strict attitude as a teacher, she has a caring and protective nature, particularly towards her younger sister. She can sometimes be slightly absent-minded, notably having a recurring difficulty with remembering people's names correctly. Her core philosophy, which she impresses upon her protégé, is that a lawyer should smile shamelessly even when completely cornered, reflecting her belief in maintaining confidence and looking for a reversal of fortune in the most desperate situations.

Her primary motivation is the pursuit of the truth at any cost. This drive stems from the injustice she felt when her mother was disgraced and the anger she holds towards those who manipulate the legal system for their own gain. She seeks to protect the innocent, especially her sister, and to ensure that those who commit crimes, particularly the powerful and corrupt, are brought to justice. She also harbors a personal vendetta against Dahlia Hawthorne, a woman who is responsible for the poisoning of her lover and the death of a client, which left a lasting emotional scar on her early legal career.

In the narrative, Chihiro initially serves as the head of her own law firm and the direct mentor to the protagonist. She is murdered early in the story by a powerful corporate blackmailer to prevent her from exposing his crimes. However, her role does not end with her death. Because of her family’s spiritual powers, her spirit is frequently channeled by her sister or her young cousin. In this form, she appears at critical moments during court trials, providing the protagonist with invaluable hints, pointing out overlooked contradictions, and directly confronting the true culprits when he is at an impasse. Her flashback cases also allow her to be the playable protagonist, showcasing her own early struggles and first major victories.

Her most significant relationship is with her younger sister, Mayoi. Chihiro is fiercely protective of her and left the family village in part to ensure Mayoi could become the family master without rivalry between them. Even after death, she returns through Mayoi’s body to help her and the protagonist. Her relationship with the protagonist is that of a demanding but supportive mentor. She saw his potential, gave him his first job, and continues to guide him from beyond the grave, trusting him to protect her sister. She also has a deep bond with her young cousin, Harumi, who adores her and trains her channeling abilities specifically to be able to summon her. Romantically, she was involved with her former colleague Diego Armando, and his search for justice after she is hurt by a culprit is a major driving force in the background of the story.

Chihiro’s character undergoes significant development through her past experiences. As a rookie lawyer, she is initially more nervous and traumatized by the suicide of a client and the near-fatal poisoning of her lover. These events shake her confidence and keep her away from court for a year. However, she overcomes this trauma by confronting the responsible party in her second trial, solidifying her resolve and transforming into the confident and formidable attorney she is known as. After her death, her development is complete; she becomes a nearly flawless source of wisdom and strength for the living characters, representing the ultimate goal of a defense attorney: a guardian who protects her loved ones even from the afterlife.

Her notable abilities include masterful legal reasoning and an almost supernatural talent for perceiving lies and inconsistencies in testimony. Though she left the village, she retains her spiritual power and wears a magatama, a sacred jewel that can reveal the secrets a person is hiding. Most significantly, she can be channeled by other spirit mediums from her family, allowing her to physically manifest in the world to aid her allies directly. This unique circumstance makes her an ever-present force in the narrative, a mentor whose legacy is defined as much by her life as by her continued influence after it.
