Description
Gō Karuma, known in English localizations as Manfred von Karma, is a central antagonist within the Ace Attorney anime, serving as a formidable obstacle whose influence shapes the legal world long before the main narrative begins. He is a legendary figure in the prosecutor's office, having maintained a perfect win record for forty consecutive years, a streak he guards with obsessive devotion. This obsession with perfection is the core of his personality, driving him to view the legal system not as a search for the truth, but as a stage for his own unblemished performance.

Born in 1951, Karuma is the father of prosecutor Karuma Mei and the adoptive father and mentor of prosecutor Mitsurugi Reiji. His courtroom demeanor is nothing short of tyrannical. He presents his arguments with theatrical gestures, including a sharp, metallic finger snap, and uses intimidation, relentless pressure, and outright manipulation to control proceedings. He frequently interrupts the defense, browbeats witnesses into giving testimony that suits his case, and has been known to submit fabricated evidence to secure a guilty verdict. His belief system holds that defense attorneys are little more than insignificant obstacles to be crushed, a sentiment he expresses with undisguised contempt.

The origin of Karuma's villainy lies in a single, irreparable blemish on his record. During a case fifteen years before the main story, a defense attorney named Mitsurugi Shin, father of Reiji, successfully argued for a professional penalty against Karuma for his underhanded tactics. This single "penalty" on his otherwise perfect career drove the prosecutor to madness. Shortly after, a chance encounter in a courthouse elevator during an earthquake led to a confrontation where Karuma, with cold calculation, murdered Shin. He was also shot in the right shoulder by a stray bullet during the incident, a wound he never properly treated, leaving the bullet lodged inside him to avoid creating medical records that could serve as evidence. This injury manifests as a nervous tic; whenever he is stressed or cornered, he instinctively clutches his aching right shoulder.

To complete his revenge, Karuma adopted the young Mitsurugi Reiji, training him to become a ruthless prosecutor in his own image while secretly harboring a grudge against the boy and his deceased father. This act created a deeply dysfunctional relationship. While he taught Reiji the skills of the trade, it was a cruel form of psychological manipulation designed to corrupt the legacy of his enemy. His relationship with his biological daughter, Mei, is similarly demanding, as he instilled in her the same fanatical pursuit of perfection, forcing her to compete for his approval and viewing her as an extension of his own legacy.

Karuma's primary role in the story is as the mastermind behind the DL-6 incident, the murder of Mitsurugi Shin, and the final antagonist that defense attorney Naruhodō Ryūichi must overcome. He frames his own adopted son for murder to ensure the statute of limitations on his own crime expires, leading to a dramatic courtroom showdown. Throughout this trial, his abilities are on full display. He has a genius-level intellect for legal strategy and has spent decades perfecting his craft, allowing him to anticipate and counter almost any argument. He is also relentlessly prepared, going so far as to coach a witness's pet parrot to give specific testimony, expecting the defense to call it to the stand.

Despite his monstrous actions, his development reveals a man who was consumed by his own pride. His defining moment is his dramatic breakdown in court when his perfect facade finally shatters. After Naruhodō uses a metal detector to prove the bullet from the DL-6 incident is still lodged in Karuma's shoulder, the legendary prosecutor unleashes a guttural, inhuman scream of pure rage and anguish, finally confessing to his decades-old crime. This moment marks the complete destruction of his identity, as his record, his freedom, and his carefully constructed life are all stripped away, revealing the petty, vengeful man beneath the polished exterior.
