Description
Nobuo Kaneko is a student at Aito High School, placed in class 2-E and assigned student number seven. He was born on May 3, 1967, and has thick, unusually stiff hair that he keeps in a crew cut for practical reasons. His background is rooted in his long-standing admiration for Hiroshi Kato and Toru Nakama, who were originally one year ahead of him. When both were held back and became his classmates, he eagerly volunteered to become their underling, driven by a sincere desire to grow stronger and more capable in the delinquent world he idealized.

In terms of personality, Nobuo is notably timid and acutely aware of his physical smallness compared to the other delinquents around him. This insecurity makes him easily frightened in confrontational situations. However, his timidity masks a volatile edge; when he is cornered or pushed past his breaking point, he can become unpredictable and capable of violent outbursts that surprise even those who know him well. He has a habit of watching yakuza dramas without fail, suggesting a fascination with the tough, hierarchical world of organized crime that he wishes he could be a part of. Despite his fears, he is fiercely loyal to Hiroshi and Toru, sticking by them as a close companion even when his own courage falters.

Nobuo's primary motivation is his ambition to become strong in fights. This desire is what led him to seek out Hiroshi and Toru and formally become their follower. He wants to prove himself and earn a place among the tougher students, though his natural nervousness often works against this goal. His loyalty to the pair is genuine, and he looks up to them as models of the strength he wishes to attain.

Within the story, Nobuo fills a supporting role as a close friend and frequent hanger-on of the two protagonists. He is part of their inner circle and often accompanies them during their daily exploits, providing a more cautious and comedic counterpoint to their brash confidence. His presence also serves to highlight the bond of loyalty within the group, as his dedication is tested by his own fear and by situations that require him to act beyond his usual limits.

His key relationships are centered on Hiroshi and Toru, whom he follows and respects. He also maintains a romantic relationship with a girlfriend named Saki. Additionally, he is on friendly terms with the eccentric Shimada brothers, known as Benz Shimada and his younger sibling. His interactions with his sister Akiko are also noted in certain adaptations. Nobuo has occasionally caused friction with Toru, provoking genuine anger from the protagonist when his panicked or reckless actions cross a line.

Regarding development, Nobuo remains largely unchanged throughout the series. He does not undergo significant physical or emotional growth; in fact, some accounts suggest his mental fortitude may have weakened over time rather than strengthened. He retains his core traits of timidity and loyalty from his introduction to the end, with his moments of explosive bravery serving as sporadic exceptions rather than signs of lasting change.

In terms of abilities, Nobuo is not a naturally gifted fighter and is easily intimidated by more imposing delinquents. However, under extreme duress, he can summon unexpected ferocity. A notable example of this is when he once acted to defend Hirosi by striking Kikunaga Junichi, a formidable opponent from Tachibana Commercial High School, with a wooden sword, a deed that demonstrated his capacity for decisive action when those he cares about are in danger. His courage in such moments is reluctant but genuine, underscoring his underlying loyalty despite his fears.
