Description
Azumi Yamada is a main character in the series Hen. She is a fifteen to sixteen year old high school girl who is described as innocent and having an average, plain appearance. After moving from Kyushu to a new city and a new apartment complex, her life changes when she meets her neighbor, Chizuru Yoshida.

In terms of personality, Azumi is initially portrayed as friendly and polite. When she first tries to be kind to Chizuru, she is harshly rejected, which confuses her. Despite this, the two eventually become friends, though Azumi begins to suspect there might be something strange about Chizuru and fears her. Her innocent and somewhat childish demeanor is noted, which stands in stark contrast to the more experienced and bold Chizuru.

Azumi has a clear personal motivation: she dreams of becoming a screenwriter. To pursue this goal, she attempts to join her school's drama club, where she befriends a young amateur filmmaker named Ryuichi Kobayashi. This ambition is a key part of her character outside of the central romantic plot.

Her most significant relationship is with Chizuru Yoshida. Azumi is the unexpected object of Chizuru's intense affection, which Chizuru eventually confesses in public. Initially, Azumi rejects this confession out of shyness and confusion, as she had not considered a romantic relationship with another girl. Despite the rejection, she finds herself unable to stop thinking about Chizuru and fantasizes about her. Throughout the story, she experiences physical reactions to Chizuru's advances, such as blushing and trembling when hugged. Over time, Azumi's feelings evolve, and she eventually comes to return Chizuru's love.

Azumi's role in the story is that of the catalyst for Chizuru's emotional awakening and the primary focus of her romantic pursuit. The narrative follows the development of their complex relationship, from Azumi's initial ignorance of Chizuru's intentions to her eventual acceptance of a romantic partnership. In the end, Azumi fully accepts her feelings for Chizuru, and the two travel together to America to be married. Regarding notable abilities, Azumi does not possess any special powers or skills beyond her ordinary life as a student; her primary pursuit is her ambition to become a screenwriter.
