Description
Chiaki Komori is the central character of the 1977 Japanese live-action film The Visitor in the Eye. She is portrayed as a young and promising tennis student, full of ambition and dedication to her sport. Her life takes a dramatic turn during a practice session when her coach accidentally hits her in the eye with a tennis ball. The injury is severe, and she is informed by medical professionals that she will never regain the sight in that eye, a diagnosis that threatens to end both her tennis aspirations and her normal way of life.

In a desperate attempt to restore her vision, her coach seeks out the services of Black Jack, a mysterious and unlicensed surgeon known for performing miraculous operations. Black Jack successfully performs a cornea transplant on Chiaki, allowing her to see again. However, this operation has an unforeseen and extraordinary consequence. After her recovery, Chiaki begins to see a vision of a mysterious, elegantly dressed man who is completely invisible to everyone else around her. This phenomenon is directly linked to her new eye, which seems to grant her a unique and haunting perception.

Chiaki's personality is initially defined by her identity as an athlete and a student. She is presented as a fairly conventional young woman whose life revolves around her friends and her tennis career at her high school. The accident and subsequent surgery thrust her into a bewildering and isolating situation. As she becomes the only person who can see the spectral visitor, a man named Shiro Kazama, she grows increasingly drawn to him, embarking on a complex and intense emotional relationship that blurs the lines between reality, fantasy, and memory. Some analyses of the character suggest her development in the story is somewhat passive, with her psychological state being more reactive to the bizarre events and the influence of the enigmatic Kazama than driven by her own proactive choices.

Her key relationships drive the plot forward. Her tennis coach, Hiroshi Imaoka, feels immense guilt over the accident and is deeply devoted to her, acting as the catalyst for her miraculous surgery. Her close friend and tennis doubles partner, Kyoko Nanbu, serves as a confidante, providing emotional support as Chiaki struggles to explain and understand the increasingly strange occurrences in her life. The most significant relationship is with Shiro Kazama, the man only she can see. This connection evolves from a mysterious apparition into a passionate and obsessive romance, which is ultimately tied to a tragic secret from the past. Chiaki's role in the story is to be the vessel for this haunting vision and the emotional core of a gothic melodrama that explores themes of love, obsession, and the indelible nature of memory. She has no notable superhuman abilities, but her post-surgery vision allows her to perceive a supernatural link to another person's memories and emotions, a phenomenon that is the central mystery of the film.
