Description
Bela Yurigasaki is a central figure in the supernatural franchise that began with the classic 1968 anime Humanoid Monster Bem, later reimagined in the 2019 anime series BEM and the 2020 live-action film Humanoid Monster Bela. She is one of three humanoid monsters, or yokai, who have long fought against evil supernatural forces while harboring a singular, poignant wish: to one day become fully human. In the 2019 anime re-imagining, Bela is portrayed as a high school student, having adopted the alias Annabella to enroll at Saint Joseph High School in Libra City's Upper Town.

Bela’s personality is notably more expressive and emotionally volatile than her counterparts, Bem and Belo. While she can be talkative and engaging, she often suppresses this side of herself around her surrogate family, presenting a more reserved exterior to match their demeanor. Despite being a monster who has faced repeated prejudice and rejection from the very humans she protects, she possesses a persistent, if cautious, hope for acceptance. In the 2019 iteration, she actively seeks to integrate into human society, forming friendships and participating in school life, which demonstrates a proactive effort to understand and connect with people. However, this openness makes her particularly vulnerable to the emotional pain that follows when her true nature is discovered or when her relationships end in betrayal.

Her deepest motivations are rooted in a profound sense of otherness and a longing for normalcy. The core struggle of all three yokai is their desire to become human, but for Bela, this is compounded by an inability to experience fundamental human sensations. She cannot taste food or feel physical pain, which creates an invisible barrier between herself and the world she wishes to join. This sensory deprivation highlights her existential isolation and fuels her determination to continue fighting for justice in the hope that her wish will eventually be granted.

Bela’s role in the story is that of a tragic heroine, often serving as a catalyst for examining the themes of prejudice, identity, and what it truly means to be human. In the 2020 live-action film that centers on her character, her presence is portrayed as an almost supernatural force that induces madness. Upon transferring to a new school, her arrival triggers a creeping psychological disturbance that slowly consumes her classmates. This narrative presents her not as a malevolent actor, but as an unwitting catalyst for chaos, with her very existence warping the minds of those around her. The film explores this through the character of Kōsuke Arata, a man whose obsession with finding the lost final episode of the original anime and his subsequent pursuit of Bela lead to his own severe mental deterioration. This version frames Bela as a mysterious figure whose connection to the classic anime is a source of dangerous, reality-bending intrigue.

Within her monster family, her key relationships are defined by a fierce protectiveness, especially toward the youngest member, Belo, whom she nurtures and shields from harm. She shares a deep bond with Bem, the group's leader, and together they navigate a world that fears them. Despite their unity, Bela's emotional responses can sometimes clash with the more reserved natures of her companions, leading to internal tension within the group. Her relationships with humans are fraught with difficulty. While she forms genuine bonds, such as with school friends, these often end in tragedy when her monstrous identity is revealed, reinforcing her tragic cycle of hope and heartbreak.

As a humanoid monster, Bela possesses a formidable array of supernatural abilities. She can voluntarily transform from her human guise into her true, more powerful monster form. Her powers include enhanced agility, teleportation, and cryokinesis, the ability to generate and control cold. This manifests as freezing breath or the emission of freezing air from her body. In her human form, her primary weapon is a concealed whip stored within her right arm, which she can deploy with precision and force. In the 1968 series, she was also credited with resurrection abilities, but the 2019 anime and subsequent film emphasize her cryokinetic powers and whip combat skills. Throughout the franchise’s various iterations, from the 1960s original to the 2019 remake and the 2020 live-action spin-off, Bela Yurigasaki remains a compelling figure—a monster who fights evil, a protector who is ostracized, and a being of immense power whose deepest wish is the simple, human experience of tasting food, feeling pain, and finding a place to belong.
