Description
Chess is a male character who serves as a primary antagonist within the Drum Island storyline. Before the events of the narrative, he held the position of Minister of Defense in the Drum Kingdom, acting as the head of staff under the tyrannical King Wapol. In this capacity, he was a willing participant in the kingdom's oppressive policies, approving and documenting every new law Wapol enacted, as well as the king's eating habits, without any moral objection. He notably supported the forced exile of the country's doctors, viewing Wapol's cruel governance as a legitimate form of protection for the people. When the Blackbeard Pirates attacked Drum Island, Chess chose to flee alongside his king rather than defend the country, and during their subsequent year-long exile, he became a member of Wapol's new pirate crew, the Bliking Pirates.

Chess is a tall man with notably long arms and a perpetually sad expression, distinguished by his wavy, thick lips. He wears a green-blue, jester-like checkered costume paired with a white winter cape and carries a large bow along with a quiver of arrows on his back. True to his authoritarian nature, his personality is marked by unwavering loyalty and sycophantic devotion to Wapol. He is also quite cocky in battle, frequently asserting that he has identified his opponent's weakness. He is ruthless and displays no hesitation in harming innocent bystanders to achieve his goals or protect his master. This blind loyalty defines his primary motivation, as he consistently prioritizes the restoration and protection of Wapol's rule above all else, even when confronted with the suffering it causes.

In the story, Chess serves as the right-hand man to the primary antagonist, Wapol. He actively participates in the attempt to reconquer Drum Island after the Straw Hat Pirates have arrived. His combat prowess is notable, as he is an exceptionally skilled archer and a capable physical fighter. He can fire multiple arrows simultaneously with great accuracy and possesses considerable endurance, having quickly recovered from a surprise attack by a large Lapahn, a creature strong enough to fell trees. His signature attack is called Checkmate, where he shoots a flaming arrow at his target. He also works in tandem with his comrade, Kuromarimo, using the highly flammable afro ornaments Kuromarimo throws as excellent targets for his own fiery projectiles.

Chess shares a crucial relationship with his fellow officer, Kuromarimo, as the two are often paired together as Wapol's top subordinates. However, his most defining relationship is with Wapol himself. During a confrontation at the former Drum Castle, after suffering repeated humiliations at the hands of Monkey D. Luffy, the enraged King Wapol uses the power of his Baku Baku no Mi Devil Fruit to consume both Chess and Kuromarimo. Wapol then fuses them into a single, larger, and more powerful being known as Chessmarimo. This fusion has four arms and wields a combination of arrows, mallets, and axes. Despite this significant power-up, Chessmarimo is ultimately defeated in a fight by Tony Tony Chopper, who identifies the original Chess's chin as the fused creature's weak point. After this defeat, and with Wapol's downfall, Chess fuses back to his normal state. He later continues to serve Wapol, appearing alongside his king at later events as part of the Evil Black Drum Kingdom's entourage.
