Description
Igaram serves as the captain of the royal guard for the Arabasta Kingdom, a position that places him at the head of the nation's military forces under the Nefertari family. He is a tall man with a small red nose and distinct blond hair styled in a way that resembles a powdered wig from a bygone era. In his role as a royal protector, he is deeply intertwined with the kingdom's royal family, being a trusted advisor to King Cobra and the husband of Terracotta, the royal palace's head chef.
Personality wise, Igaram is defined by his profound and unwavering loyalty to Princess Nefertari Vivi, to whom he acts as a devoted guardian, almost like a second father. He is prepared to sacrifice his own life to ensure her safety, a trait that makes him extremely protective and often worried about her well-being. A quirky and consistent personality trait is his unique manner of speaking; whenever his voice becomes tired, he clears it by vocalizing "Ma~ma~ma~" like an opera singer warming up, a habit that has become his signature.
The primary motivation driving Igaram's actions throughout the story is the salvation of Arabasta. To uncover the identity of the mastermind behind the criminal organization Baroque Works, which was instigating a civil war in his homeland, he aided Princess Vivi in a dangerous infiltration mission. He took on the codename Mr. 8, posing as a Frontier Agent of Baroque Works, and was partnered with the agent known as Miss Monday. His undercover work led him to operate on Cactus Island, where he became the mayor of the pirate-hunting town of Whisky Peak, using it as a front to maintain his cover.
In the story, Igaram initially appears as a minor antagonist when the Straw Hat Pirates arrive at Whisky Peak, greeting them with a welcoming party that is actually a trap. However, after he and his fellow agents are defeated by Roronoa Zoro, his role shifts dramatically. He reveals the truth about Baroque Works to Nami and begs her to ensure Princess Vivi’s safe return to Arabasta. He then devises a plan to act as a decoy, disguising himself as Vivi and sailing on a separate ship to draw the enemy's fire. His vessel is destroyed by the Baroque Works vice president, Miss All Sunday, leading everyone to believe he was killed. Igaram miraculously survives this explosion and returns to Arabasta at a critical moment, bringing a witness who can prove the king's innocence and help end the civil war.
Key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Princess Vivi is the most significant, as he cares for her deeply and puts himself in harm's way for her countless times. His relationship with the Straw Hat Pirates evolves from outright hostility to profound gratitude; after Crocodile is defeated, he helps shelter the crew from the Marines and is later shocked to read that Nico Robin, the woman who seemingly killed him, has joined their ranks. He also shares a comical but loving relationship with his wife, Terracotta, who bears an almost identical appearance to him, often leading to confusion.
Regarding his development, Igaram does not undergo a dramatic internal transformation but rather serves as a steadfast pillar of loyalty from start to finish. His role progresses from a deceptive enemy to a desperate ally, and finally to a grateful friend of the Straw Hats. Later in the series, he continues his duties, accompanying Vivi and King Cobra to the Levely, the global meeting of monarchs, where his overprotective nature continues to show as he worries about Vivi's safety and actions.
Igaram possesses notable abilities that reflect his eccentric and resourceful nature. As the captain of the royal guard, he is a capable fighter and also skilled in the art of disguise, as seen when he perfectly mimics Princess Vivi. His combat style is highly unorthodox, relying on firearms cleverly hidden within his personal effects. His primary weapon is a saxophone which, when played, fires a devastating blast of bullets like a giant shotgun in an attack he calls Igarappa. Additionally, he has small guns and cannons hidden within the large curls of his hair, which he can deploy and fire by pulling on his necktie in a technique known as Igarappappa.
