Description
Akio Itagaki is a minor character in the film, serving as an employee and engineer for the company Toyo Balloon. His professional background is in inflatable technology, specifically flotation devices similar to those used in naval aircraft.

Itagaki is a pragmatic and resolute individual. When he first introduces his company's technology at a disaster countermeasure meeting, he does so with a clear, professional demeanor, explaining complex technical details about how CO2-inflated air sacs could be used to raise Godzilla rapidly to the ocean's surface, causing explosive decompression. His calm competence in the face of a monstrous threat defines his personality. He is not a soldier, but a civilian engineer who has nonetheless been shaped by the experience of war, a fact he uses to justify his direct involvement in the dangerous operation.

Itagaki's primary motivation is to ensure the success of Operation Wada Tsumi, the civilian-led plan to destroy Godzilla. He is deeply invested in the technical aspects of the plan and insists on personally going aboard the destroyer Yukikaze. When the operation's leader, Kenji Noda, expresses concern for their safety, Itagaki firmly responds, "We've all seen war too," demonstrating that his past experiences have given him the courage and resolve to face danger directly rather than remain on the sidelines. His role in the story is therefore that of a key technical contributor and volunteer combatant.

His key relationship is with Kenji Noda, the former naval engineer devising the plan. Itagaki respects Noda's leadership but is not afraid to challenge his protective instincts, advocating for his own place in the fight. He also works closely with his fellow Toyo Balloon employees, coordinating with them to prepare and deploy the flotation devices from the ship's stern.

Throughout the film's climax, Itagaki demonstrates notable development from a background meeting attendee to an active, courageous participant in a life-or-death military operation. He and his colleagues are shown preparing the equipment under immense pressure. When the operation goes awry and the ship's crane begins to buckle under Godzilla's weight, Itagaki takes immediate charge of the situation, shouting at the other volunteers to get back to safety just before the crane collapses. In the final moments, as Godzilla prepares to unleash its atomic breath on their ship, Itagaki and the others accept their fate, only to be saved by the protagonist's last-ditch attack. He and the crew then salute as Godzilla's body disintegrates, marking his survival and the successful, if harrowing, completion of their mission. His notable ability is his technical expertise with inflatable balloon systems and his cool-headedness under fire.
