Description
Pessimism is a general of the Deathdrives, the enemy force in the anime Brave Bang Bravern!. As one of the organization's executives, it embodies the concept of pessimism and appears late in the series as part of a three-member attack group alongside the Deathdrives Vanitas and Knuth.
Pessimism has a distinctly mournful appearance. Its body is thin and gray, with thick green pipes coiled across the entire frame and withered branch-like parts attached to its back. Its long, slender arms resemble manipulator claws, and it has a habit of covering its face with them. The face is shaped like a weeping expression, and two vertical lines in the center of the face glow whenever it speaks.
In personality, Pessimism is melancholic and easily overwhelmed by sorrow. Its characteristic remark that it feels so depressed it could cry reflects its tendency toward despair, and its stated goal is to obtain a death wrapped in a sadness never before felt. Like other Deathdrives, it seeks a death that matches its own nature, and for Pessimism that ideal death is one steeped in grief.
Its notable ability is a hallucination-inducing mist released from the skirt-like sections of its lower body. The mist causes opponents to perceive figures that resemble Pessimism, creating confusion on the battlefield and making it difficult to track the real threat.
In the story, Pessimism appears during the attack that follows the formation of the Brave Knights unit. Bravern and Isami take on both Vanitas and Pessimism while the Brave Knights engage Knuth, and the fight results in the loss of Lewis Smith. In the aftermath, Bravern gains a new armor form, becoming Burn Bravern, and together with Isami he destroys both Vanitas and Pessimism, bringing the group's assault to an end.
Pessimism's relationships are limited to the war it takes part in. It fights alongside Vanitas and Knuth as fellow Deathdrives, and its only meaningful interactions are with its enemies, chiefly Bravern and Isami, who defeat it. It does not develop as a character over the course of the series; its role is that of an antagonist whose arrival raises the stakes of the conflict and whose defeat marks a turning point before the final battles.
