Description
Gideon Gordon Graves, often known by the alias G-Man, is the primary antagonist in the Scott Pilgrim anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. His background reveals a deliberate reinvention of self; he was originally born Gordon Goose in North Bay, Ontario. During his high school years, he was an awkward and unfashionable teen, famously mocked by the entire school after presenting a popular girl with a twelve-point business plan to convince her to date him. Following this public humiliation, he moved away and completely transformed his identity, becoming the wealthy, sophisticated, and powerful music mogul known as Gideon Graves.
In the alternate timeline of the anime, Gideon's personality is initially consistent with his other incarnations: he appears cold, calculating, superficially polite, and arrogantly in control. However, after his plans unravel and he is usurped as the leader of the League of Evil Exes by Matthew Patel, a more vulnerable and insecure side is revealed. This downfall strips away his composed facade, exposing the deep-seated wounds of his past. His motivation shifts from simply controlling Ramona Flowers to a desperate need to reclaim his status and enact revenge on those who took everything from him, eventually hatching a new plan with a partner to get back what he lost.
Gideon's role in the story is subverted from his traditional position as the final boss. While he is still the founder of the League and Ramona's seventh evil ex-boyfriend, he is quickly dethroned, leading to a journey of loss and rebuilding. His key relationships are central to this development. His dynamic with Julie Powers, an old classmate who takes him in during his depression, evolves from a temporary arrangement into a genuine partnership and romantic relationship. He also forms an unlikely and authentic friendship with Lucas Lee, another of Ramona's exes. These connections allow him to regain his confidence, though he channels it back into villainous schemes, now with allies at his side rather than just pawns.
Unlike his comic counterpart who wields the psychological weapon known as "The Glow" to manipulate emotions and memories, the anime version of Gideon appears less powerful in this regard. He is still a competent fighter, proficient with swords, often using a katana concealed within his cane. His fighting style is described as possessing a lazy but graceful power. The anime downplays his more overtly supernatural abilities, focusing instead on his business acumen and strategic mind as his primary tools. This version also seems to be younger, depicted as a contemporary of the main cast rather than in his early thirties, and ultimately proves less formidable in direct combat than his previous selves.
