Description
The Elevator Hipster is a minor antagonist in the animated adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, serving as one of several unnamed henchmen employed by the primary antagonist, Gideon Graves. These characters are part of a larger group known as Gideon's Hipsters, who act as guards and bouncers at the Chaos Theatre, the location of the film's final confrontation. As their name implies, the Elevator Hipster is specifically one of two individuals assigned to guard the elevator leading into this venue, making them the last line of physical defense before the final battle.
In terms of appearance and personality, the Elevator Hipster, along with his partner, dresses in the distinctive black leather clothing associated with a blend of hipster and gothic subcultures. Their demeanor is that of a confident and obstructive gatekeeper, wielding their authority over access to the theatre with a sense of self-importance. Their primary motivation is simply to fulfill their duty as sentinels for Gideon, preventing unauthorized individuals like Scott Pilgrim from entering the inner sanctum. They do not possess a personal vendetta against Scott but are obstacles he must overcome.
The Elevator Hipster's role in the story is purely functional, serving as a minor but memorable obstacle for the protagonist. He appears in two distinct rounds or encounters at the Chaos Theatre. In the first round, the Elevator Hipster and his partner confront Scott and demand he provide the "second password" to be granted access. Rather than a physical altercation, this encounter is a puzzle-like interaction. Scott, exasperated by the situation, simply sighs, and this sigh turns out to be the correct password, allowing him to pass without a fight. In the second round, however, the confrontation becomes physical. Scott, having progressed further, bypasses the verbal test and instead defeats both elevator guards with a series of well-placed punches, causing them to explode into a shower of coins. This act of bursting into coins upon defeat is a trait they share with many other enemies in the film, directly referencing video game mechanics.
Key relationships for the Elevator Hipster are limited. He is a subordinate of Gideon Graves, taking orders from him and serving his interests. He works in tandem with the other unnamed hipsters, including the Lollipop Hipster who guards the theatre's main entrance. There is no significant development for this character across the story, as he remains a static, one-dimensional henchman. His notable abilities include basic martial arts skills common to Gideon's Hipsters, though these are ultimately ineffective against Scott in the second encounter. More significantly, his ability to grant or deny access based on knowledge of a password is his primary function, though this is subverted when Scott's sigh proves to be the key. Ultimately, his purpose is to add to the video game-like atmosphere of the film, serving as a minor boss or guard enemy that the hero must either outwit or overpower before facing the final challenge.
