Description
Envy Adams, originally named Natalie V. Adams, is a significant figure from Scott Pilgrim's past who appears as a secondary antagonist and later an ally. She serves as the lead singer and keyboardist for the popular Canadian band The Clash at Demonhead. Her real name, Natalie, is rarely used by the time the main story takes place, as she has fully embraced her stage persona.

The character's background reveals a dramatic personal transformation. In her early years, she was a childhood friend of Todd Ingram, who later became her boyfriend. During her first year at the University of Toronto, she was introduced to Scott Pilgrim by her roommate, Julie Powers. At this time, she was a quiet, self-described dork with a large collection of anime toys and books. She, Scott, and Stephen Stills formed the band Kid Chameleon. As the band began to experience success, Natalie underwent a significant change. She sold her old belongings to buy expensive clothes and began calling herself Envy, a name derived from her initials N.V. Her personality shifted from shy and nice to callous, aggressive, and ambitious, much to the confusion of Scott, who remembers her original kind nature.

Envy's primary motivation is her ambition for fame and success, which ultimately overrides her personal relationships. She took creative control of Kid Chameleon, brought in new musicians, and signed the band to a record label against the wishes of Scott and Stephen Stills. She also began an affair with Todd Ingram, which contributed to her brutal breakup with Scott. After this relationship ended, she formed The Clash at Demonhead with Todd and drummer Lynette Guycott, achieving the widespread fame she desired.

In the story, Envy functions as a catalyst for Scott's emotional turmoil. Her return to Toronto with The Clash at Demonhead forces Scott to confront the unresolved pain and lack of closure from their past relationship. She presents a confident and intimidating facade, openly taunting Scott, his new girlfriend Ramona Flowers, and his friends. She claims to know about Ramona's past, leading to a physical confrontation between the two women. During this fight, Envy proves herself to be a capable fighter, though she is ultimately stopped when Scott exploits a weak spot on the back of her knee.

Envy's key relationships are complex and often troubled. Her relationship with Todd Ingram is central to her role as an antagonist. She believed his grand romantic gesture of blasting a crater into the moon was proof of his devotion, but she is devastated upon learning he performed the same act for Ramona and discovering his infidelity with their drummer. Following this, she returns home and begins to shed her harsh rock star persona. Later, she becomes involved with Gideon Graves, who helps launch her solo career, though she describes this relationship as a mutually beneficial arrangement based on his money and her talent rather than genuine affection. By the end of the series, she reconciles with Scott, finally giving him the closure he sought by sharing the true, painful details of their breakup and sharing a hug.

Envy's character shows notable development, moving from a villainous figure defined by her cruelty and ambition to a more nuanced and sympathetic person. After her breakup with Todd, she discards the "glitter of the rock life" and returns to a version of her former self. She later admits her role in her and Scott's downfall and acknowledges her transactional relationship with Gideon. In terms of abilities, Envy does not possess the supernatural vegan powers of characters like Todd Ingram. However, she is a formidable physical fighter, able to hold her own against Ramona. She also has a unique weakness: poking her behind the knee causes her to lose her strength and fall.
