Description
Akira Shinmei, who transforms into Aorenger, is a foundational character in the Super Sentai series, known as the first blue warrior. He is a 24 or 25-year-old man who was the sole survivor of the Tohoku branch of the EAGLE organization after it was decimated by the Black Cross Army. Prior to joining the Gorenger team, he served as a marksmanship instructor and a squad leader responsible for practical training at his branch. His skills are diverse, ranging from expert-level archery to a remarkable talent for piloting and operating various vehicles, including ships and aircraft, having once aspired to be a racecar driver.
Within the Gorenger team, Shinmei holds the position of second-in-command, a role that suits his mature and composed personality. As the oldest member of the group, he is typically cool-headed and a capable decision-maker, often saving the team from difficult situations. Despite a surface-level demeanor that might seem cold or focused on machinery over people, he is surprisingly kind, particularly towards children, and possesses a grown-up sense of responsibility that highly values teamwork. He has a great deal of trust in his fellow Rangers and holds strong feelings of camaraderie, once trying to launch a solo mission against orders to rescue a comrade in danger. While he may sometimes disagree with the team's leader, Tsuyoshi Kaijo (Akarenger), their mutual trust and respect are a cornerstone of the team's dynamic.
Shinmei's role in the story is heavily tied to his technical expertise. He is the primary pilot for the Gorenger's aerial vehicles, including the Variblune and its successor, the Varidreen, for which he has a special affection, often referring to it as "my Variblune". He is often stationed at the secret base, awaiting emergency dispatch requests, which places him in a critical support and transportation role for the team. His character development is subtly shown through his interactions and growing bond with the team, moving from a somewhat isolated figure, partly due to the actor's busy schedule limiting his screen time, to a fully integrated and trusted sub-leader.
As Aorenger, his most notable abilities are his unparalleled marksmanship and piloting skills. His primary weapon is the Blue Cherry, a powerful bow that can fire specially designed Blue Arrows and Blue Arrow Rockets with incredible accuracy. His helmet visor is even shaped to evoke a drawn bow, symbolizing his expertise. In battle, he can perform attacks such as the Blue Kick and the Blue Rolling Attack, where he stabs a monster with an arrow after a forward roll. His suit is also equipped with a lightning rod on the helmet, which can be deployed to absorb and counter electricity-based attacks. He pilots the super motorcycle Blue Machine and later the Blue Star, in addition to his aerial vehicles.
