Description
Aquila Marin is a Silver Saint of Athena who serves as the guardian of the Aquila constellation. She is a Japanese woman who trained in the Sanctuary in Greece, and she holds the rank of Silver Saint, which is the second highest tier among the 88 Saints of Athena. Marin is of average height with a well-proportioned build and brown hair. As a female Saint, she adheres to a strict code that requires her to conceal her face behind a mask, symbolically renouncing her femininity to dedicate herself fully to her duties as a warrior of Athena.
Marin is introduced as the strict and demanding mentor of the protagonist, Pegasus Seiya. She is known for her calm, analytical, and steady personality, possessing excellent insight that makes her a highly skilled fighter. Despite her harsh training methods, she demonstrates a deep care for her students and is willing to risk her life for what she believes is right. Her intelligence is considerable; she is one of the first characters to suspect that the Pope of the Sanctuary is an impostor, which drives her to investigate the corruption at the heart of the organization.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is twofold. On a personal level, Marin has been searching for her younger brother, from whom she was separated in the past. This personal quest causes Seiya to initially wonder if Marin might be his own long-lost sister, Seika. On a broader scale, she is dedicated to protecting Athena and upholding true justice, leading her to defy the corrupt Sanctuary hierarchy when it orders the execution of Seiya and his fellow Bronze Saints.
In the story, Marin serves as a crucial ally to the Bronze Saints. After training Seiya and helping him win the Pegasus Cloth, she later pretends to follow the Pope's orders to kill the traitors. In reality, she betrays the Silver Saints sent on the mission, faking Seiya's death to protect him from the Lizard Saint Misty. When her betrayal is discovered by the Hound Saint Asterion, who can read minds, she is defeated by the Whale Saint Moses and is tied to a cross in the ocean to be used as bait for Seiya. During the subsequent battle, she manages to clear her mind of all thoughts to neutralize Asterion's mind-reading ability, allowing her to defeat him with her signature technique. During the conflict of the Twelve Temples, Marin infiltrates the forbidden Star Hill, a place only the Pope may enter, and discovers the corpse of the true Pope, Shion, proving that Gemini Saga has been impersonating him for thirteen years. She later aids a poisoned Seiya by giving him her mask to filter out toxic rose fumes, an act that leaves her vulnerable and unconscious, though Seiya respects her secret by not looking at her face.
Key relationships define her actions. Her bond with Seiya is central, as she is his teacher and a protective figure who believes in his potential. She has a complex relationship with the Snake Saint Shaina, who is initially a rival but later becomes an ally and friend. She is also shown to be friends with the Lion Gold Saint, Aiolia. While she was once mistaken for Seiya's sister, it is ultimately revealed that her actual younger brother is Touma, a God Warrior serving Artemis.
Marin undergoes significant development, transforming from a mysterious, stoic instructor into a renegade warrior actively working against the Sanctuary's corruption. Her journey is one of uncovering truth, from the secrets of the Pope to the fate of her lost brother. In the final arcs, she disappears from the front lines but reappears having fulfilled a vital mission: she successfully locates Seiya's real sister, Seika, bringing closure to Seiya's personal quest while the Bronze Saints battle Hades.
As a Silver Saint, her abilities are far superior to those of Bronze Saints, allowing her to move at speeds ranging from Mach 2 to Mach 5. Her physical strength is augmented by her agility, allowing for greater mobility and flexibility in battle. Her signature technique is the Eagle Toe Flash, a powerful flying kick where she leaps high into the air and drives her heel into an opponent with tremendous force. She also uses the Meteor Fist, a technique that unleashes hundreds of punches per second, which she taught to Seiya. Another ability is the Empty Fist, a counterattack that creates an illusion to deceive an opponent into thinking they have been hit by a fatal blow, while in reality, it is a non-lethal deterrent. She is also capable of using illusions to confuse her enemies and can empty her mind completely to counter telepathic abilities.
