Description
Doc is the owner and operator of the Hanazono clinic, a small medical practice located in the Shinjuku district. He is a capable and dedicated physician who primarily tends to the needs of the area's underworld denizens, criminals, and others who cannot seek help from conventional hospitals. Because his patients often cannot pay, his clinic does not generate much income, and he occasionally works as a club bartender to make ends meet.
Doc has a long and significant personal history with Ryo Saeba that predates the events of Angel Heart. He served as the doctor for the same group of guerrillas that a young Ryo belonged to when Ryo was a child mercenary. It was Doc who treated Ryo for the effects of the angel dust drug given to him by his adoptive father, Kaibara. This deep connection establishes Doc as one of the few people from Ryo's past who understands his history and has earned his trust.
Within the story, Doc plays the crucial role of a supporter and caretaker for the main cast. He is the second person, after Umibozu, to realize that Glass Heart carries the heart and memories of Kaori Makimura. His recognition of this fact is informed by his personal history; before hiring his current nurse, Tomoko, he had employed a young Kaori as a nurse's assistant at his clinic when she was approximately Glass Heart's age. This prior relationship with Kaori gives him a unique perspective on Glass Heart's situation. He later encounters a despairing Glass Heart in a dark alley as she searches for Ryo, and he provides her with guidance and shelter at his clinic.
Doc's motivations are rooted in a sense of duty and paternal care. He looks after the people of Shinjuku, including Ryo and his associates, without expectation of reward. He acts as a stabilizing, paternal figure, particularly for Ryo, filling a role that is somewhere between an old comrade and a surrogate father. His primary goal is to heal and protect those who come to him, using his medical skills to serve a community that exists on the fringes of society. His key relationships include his bond with Ryo, his memory of the young Kaori, his role as the employer of his nurse Tomoko, and his position as a trusted confidant to Glass Heart after he helps her.
While the character does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, his development is shown through his acceptance of Glass Heart. He transitions from a man haunted by the memory of Kaori's death to one who actively supports her successor, providing the new Glass Heart with a safe place and a sense of belonging. Doc is not a fighter or an operative; his notable ability is his high level of skill as a medical doctor. He is shown to be very capable in his profession, treating serious injuries and understanding complex medical conditions, including the unique circumstances surrounding Glass Heart's transplanted heart. His true strength lies in his wisdom, his discretion, and his unwavering reliability in a violent and uncertain world.
