Description
Hitomi Kisaragi, known by her codename Cutie Honey, is the central character of the 2016 live-action film Cutie Honey -Tears-. This version of the classic heroine reimagines her as an advanced android, created by a genius scientist named Dr. Kisaragi. She is built using the neural data and brain patterns of the doctor's deceased biological daughter, granting her an advanced artificial intelligence system capable of genuine human emotion.

In the world of the film, set near the end of the 21st century, Hitomi is given life during a period of environmental collapse and societal division. The wealthy elite live in pollution-free upper levels of a vertical city, while the impoverished masses suffer in the lower sectors under toxic rainfall. Dr. Kisaragi creates Hitomi as a being meant to bridge the gap between humans and machines, endowing her with the Aerial Element Fixing Device, a unique power source capable of altering matter. However, before she can fulfill her purpose, the doctor is overthrown by another of his creations, an android named Jill, who launches a violent robot rebellion. Dr. Kisaragi sends Hitomi down to the surface to fight for the oppressed and end Jill's reign, at the cost of his own life.

Unlike many other portrayals of Cutie Honey, Hitomi is depicted as being more mature, serious, and initially single-minded in her purpose. Her prime motivation is to follow her programmed instructions from Dr. Kisaragi: to overthrow the dictator Jill. She does not initially fight for the people of the slums out of a sense of justice or compassion, but because it is her assigned mission. This sense of drive makes her lash out at anyone she perceives as an obstacle, and she views her capacity for human emotion not as a gift, but as a weakness that hinders her cold efficiency. Her role in the story is to act as the warrior of love, a symbol of hope for the resistance movement, even as she struggles to understand the very emotions she is meant to represent.

Throughout the film, Hitomi’s relationships are key to her development. She is found by a young boy named Seiji Hayami, who grows up to become a journalist and the leader of the human resistance against Jill. Hayami tracks her down and requests her help, forming a partnership. Living among the denizens of the lower levels, including a family that takes her in as a daughter, forces Hitomi to confront her own nature. Through these interactions, she begins to open up, learning that her humanity is not a flaw but a source of strength. Her primary antagonist is Jill, her "sister" android, whose cold, calculating perfection represents the opposite of Hitomi's emotional journey.

Hitomi's character development centers on her acceptance of her own imperfections. Initially, she wishes to be rid of her emotions to complete her mission without distraction. However, she eventually comes to understand that her ability to feel pain, uncertainty, and love gives her an unpredictability that a purely logical machine cannot match. This realization allows her to overcome Jill in their final battle, turning what she once saw as defects into her ultimate advantage.

In terms of abilities, Hitomi possesses shape-shifting powers, primarily activated through a choker, which allows her to transform into her battle form, Cutie Honey. In this form, she wields a rapier for close-quarters combat and can also disguise her appearance. A unique aspect of this iteration is that, despite being an android, she was built to replicate a human so fully that she feels pain and sustains injuries just like a real person. She requires calories to power herself and needs medical aid when damaged. This vulnerability highlights her core theme: true strength comes not from being a flawless machine, but from embracing the fragile, unpredictable, and emotional nature of being human. At the film's conclusion, Hitomi uses her Airborne Element Fixing Device to absorb a massive cloud of toxic gases released after Jill's defeat, sacrificing herself to save the city's citizens, dissolving into nothing as she sheds tears for those she leaves behind.
