Description
Hayato Ichimonji in Shin Kamen Rider is a young freelance journalist and photographer who is kidnapped by the secret organization SHOCKER. The group forcibly transforms him into a powerful cyborg designated as Batta Augment-02, intended to serve as a tool to eliminate Takeshi Hongo, the original Kamen Rider who betrayed SHOCKER.
Before his abduction, Ichimonji led a life of adventure and curiosity. He was an easy-going individual with a deep obsession for investigating incidents around the world, often jumping into dangerous situations without hesitation. His globetrotting lifestyle allowed him to learn multiple foreign languages and make friends easily. A lover of nature and animal photography, he had traveled extensively through regions like South America and Africa by motorcycle, developing self-taught fighting skills to protect himself while covering perilous stories. His personal philosophy held that fighting evil ultimately benefits the entire world.
Ichimonji possesses remarkable mental fortitude. Even under the influence of SHOCKER's brainwashing, which overwrites memories of despair with artificial euphoria, he is able to maintain a core of his own will. After being freed from SHOCKER's control by Ruriko Midorikawa, he immediately acts to protect her and Takeshi Hongo, demonstrating an instinctive drive to defend others.
His personality is marked by a preference for working alone, with hints of a cynical side. Despite this initial reluctance toward teamwork, witnessing Ruriko's sacrifice for his freedom and observing Hongo's relentless pursuit of justice convinces Ichimonji to accept the idea of joining forces. He quickly bonds with Hongo, developing a deep friendship that makes him profoundly heartbroken when Hongo later dies. When agents relay Hongo's final request for Ichimonji to continue fighting using a helmet containing Hongo's prana sequence, he accepts more for the sake of his fallen friend than for any abstract mission, finding a glimmer of hope in what his comrade left behind.
In battle, Ichimonji is fearless and refuses to back down regardless of the odds. Unlike Hongo, he appears more comfortable with decisive action against enemies loyal to SHOCKER. However, he maintains a sense of fairness, once allowing Hongo to charge his Typhoon belt fully before engaging him in a fight. After adopting Hongo's helmet, he notes that it feels kind rather than cold and hungry like his original one, suggesting a preference for the gentler aspect it represents.
As Kamen Rider No. 2, Ichimonji's role in the story begins as an antagonist sent to destroy Hongo. Following his liberation by Ruriko Midorikawa, he becomes Hongo's ally and partner, christening himself as Kamen Rider No. 2 and fighting alongside Hongo as the Double Riders. After Hongo's death, Ichimonji takes up his friend's helmet, which contains Hongo's encoded prana sequence, and continues the mission against SHOCKER as Kamen Rider No. 2+1, with the two Riders effectively fighting together anew through this symbolic union.
His key relationship is with Takeshi Hongo, evolving from enemy to partner to a friend whose legacy he carries forward. Ruriko Midorikawa plays a crucial role as the one who frees him from SHOCKER's brainwashing, setting him on the path to becoming a hero. The Anti-Shocker Alliance later provides support, commissioning him a new Cyclone motorcycle and suit.
In terms of development, Ichimonji transforms from a cynical loner who distrusts teamwork into a committed partner who willingly fights alongside another. He moves from being SHOCKER's unwilling pawn to a self-proclaimed enemy of the organization and ally of humanity, finally christening himself as Kamen Rider No. 2. His journey culminates in accepting Hongo's legacy, incorporating his friend's essence into his own identity as a Rider.
Notable abilities of Ichimonji as Kamen Rider No. 2 include the superhuman strength, speed, and durability granted by his cyborg augmentation. His Typhoon transformation belt harnesses wind power to activate his abilities. His signature attack is the Rider Kick, a powerful leaping kick technique. As Batta Augment-02, his design is modeled after a grasshopper, granting him tremendous jumping power. After incorporating Hongo's helmet, his form becomes Kamen Rider No. 2+1, representing the combined strength of both Riders. His fighting style draws from the self-defense skills he developed as a journalist covering dangerous situations around the world.
